Beaufort and Jasper Counties Join Hands for Wreaths Across America
As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of gratitude and remembrance fills the air in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Local cemeteries are gearing up to take part in a meaningful tribute—Wreaths Across America—scheduled for December 14 and 15. This heartwarming initiative aims to honor the brave men and women who have served in the military by placing beautiful wreaths at their gravesites.
What is Wreaths Across America?
Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization that has been spreading the love and respect for our veterans since 1992, when Maine businessman Morrill Worcester kickstarted the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The idea has since blossomed into a nationwide movement, bringing communities together to remember our fallen heroes during the holiday season.
Beaufort National Cemetery Ceremony
On December 14, the ceremony in Beaufort County will take place at the renowned Beaufort National Cemetery located at 1601 Boundary Street. Kicking off at noon, this event will see volunteers placing Remembrance Wreaths on veterans’ graves, celebrating their sacrifices in a deeply profound way.
Excitement is already building as a special motorcycle escort will welcome the tractor trailers carrying the wreaths around 11:30 a.m. Prior to the wreath-laying, a brief ceremony will pay tribute to each branch of our armed forces, setting the stage for a day filled with heartfelt remembrance.
Community Involvement
All community members are warmly invited to participate in this touching event. A post on the Wreaths Across America Beaufort Facebook page encourages locals to come out and lend a hand, saying, “Join us as we place Remembrance Wreaths on our Veterans’ graves…” This is a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to gather and honor the lives of those who fought for freedom.
Events in Jasper County
Meanwhile, the spirit of remembrance extends to Jasper County as well. The wreath-laying ceremony at Ridgeland Cemetery will begin at noon on the same day—December 14. With at least 232 veterans buried there, coordinator Richard Dean emphasizes the importance of saying their names aloud while placing a wreath. “This assures they will never be forgotten,” he shared, capturing the essence of this heartfelt act.
In addition to Ridgeland Cemetery, several other cemeteries in and around Ridgeland will also host ceremonies, including the Old Sardis Cemetery, Grahamville Cemetery, and Grimes Cemetery. As a special note, a wreath-laying will also take place following services on December 15 at Gillisonville Baptist Church, ensuring that many of our heroes are honored.
Hardeeville Celebrates Our Heroes
On the same day, the Hardeeville community will join the festivities with a ceremony at Hardeeville City Hall at noon. Hardeeville Wreaths Across America Chair Steve Talbot promises a formal scripted ceremony followed by the laying of ceremonial wreaths at the base of the City Hall flagpole. To add to the excitement, a caravan will transport wreaths to five cemeteries around Hardeeville, making the day truly memorable!
