Malfunction Temporarily Closes Woods Memorial Bridge

On Thursday, May 16, traffic was brought to a standstill on Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge due to a malfunction. This significant piece of infrastructure, which connects Lady’s Island and the other Sea Islands, was temporarily inaccessible. As a result, the diverted traffic caused noteworthy congestion on the McTeer Bridge.

After the bridge experienced its unexpected closure, a specialist from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) arrived promptly to investigate. The identified issue was a piece of the resistance barrier failing to return to its normal position after the bridge’s opening. Upon closer inspection, evidence suggested that the bridge had been struck by a vehicle or an elusive ‘wide load’, resulting in a bent resistance barrier. The damage meant that while the bridge could swing open, it could not close again, leading to its temporary closure.

Recurring Issues

Deemed an integral part of the region’s heritage after being included in the National Register of Historic Places on January 6, 2023, this isn’t the first time the Woods Memorial Bridge has encountered mechanical problems. The bridge, which first opened in 1959, has been shut down multiple times in the past year due to similar issues.

In response to the frequent closures, SCDOT initiated a $500,000 upgrade project for the bridge’s gates towards the end of 2023. It was observed that the bridge’s circuits were highly susceptible to malfunctions due to their close proximity to the saline water.

After that incident, the Woods Memorial Bridge was reopened to traffic at about 1:30 pm on the same day and has remained in operation since. As motorists breathe a sigh of relief in Beaufort, questions about long-term solutions to the bridge’s problems remain.
