Virginia State University Women’s Lacrosse Making History

Virginia State University women’s lacrosse starting on solid footing

In a historic debut, Virginia State University women’s lacrosse started its program with a resounding success, defeating fellow HBCU UDC 17-7 on Feb. 21 for its first win in program history. The program, led by former Howard University soccer star Ashley Lawrence, was formed in late 2022, marking a significant milestone for women’s lacrosse at the university.

Coach’s Perspective

Former Howard University soccer standout, Ashley Lawrence, reflected on her experience playing lacrosse at Howard as preparation for leading the Virginia State University women’s lacrosse program. She emphasized the unique challenges and opportunities that being part of an HBCU sports program offered, highlighting the valuable lessons learned on and off the field at a Division 1 level.

Most of the Virginia State University women’s lacrosse players are freshmen, navigating the transition from high school to college athletics. Lawrence expressed the importance of unity and growth within the team, emphasizing the joy of watching the players develop together and form a solid foundation for the program’s future.

Building a Unique Legacy

As one of only four HBCU lacrosse programs, Virginia State University is providing a rare opportunity for student-athletes to compete in a supportive and culturally affirming environment. By uniting players who share similar backgrounds and experiences, the team is fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging that enhances their love for the sport.

Lawrence highlighted the significance of creating a space where all team members can relate to one another, emphasizing the positive impact of representing a diverse and talented group of young women in collegiate lacrosse.

Looking Ahead

With their inaugural victory setting a strong precedent, Virginia State University women’s lacrosse is poised for a promising future under Lawrence’s guidance. The team’s early success and commitment to growth bode well for their continued development and impact within the HBCU athletic community.

As the program continues to build on its solid footing, the focus remains on fostering teamwork, skill development, and a supportive environment where every player can thrive both on and off the field.
