Ridgeland’s Veterans’ Reunion Celebrates Bonds of Bravery at Annual Gala

Ridgeland’s Veterans’ Reunion: A Heartwarming Surprise at the Annual Gala

In the charming city of Ridgeland, a touching reunion unfolded at the annual gala for Operation Patriots Forward Base (OPFOB) on November 9, held on the beautiful Hilton Head Island. This event not only celebrated the bravery of veterans but also brought together two heroes from different corners of the world, creating a breathtaking moment that echoed the bonds forged in battle.

The Mission of OPFOB

OPFOB is more than just an organization; it stands as a lifeline for veterans and first responders, aiming to preserve lives and combat the tragic epidemic of veteran suicide. This remarkable 268-acre facility provides a safe haven where these brave individuals can come together, sharing experiences through outdoor and recreational activities. It fosters camaraderie that is vital for healing and support.

A Shocking Surprise

Among the stars of the night was Craig Ostergard, a Hilton Head resident who received the prestigious Sgt. Baez Honor Courage Commitment Award. The award came as an unexpected honor presented to him by his former Vietnamese counterpart, Ri Nay, whom he served alongside during the Vietnam War. Ostergard was taken aback, expressing his heartfelt gratitude despite asserting, “I don’t do this for accolades.” His true motivation lies in making a difference for fellow veterans who return home with feelings of isolation and a lack of purpose.

Reflections on Service

Ostergard’s journey back from Vietnam was fraught with challenges, reflecting a broader narrative faced by many of his comrades. “When I came back, I was spat upon and felt misunderstood,” he recounted. Despite those hardships, he managed to rise through the ranks of a Fortune 500 company and build a successful life for his family in Hilton Head.

His accolades do not end with business success; during his service, he earned two Bronze Stars. His involvement with OPFOB has been substantial, as he dedicates time to supporting fellow veterans, embodying the very spirit of compassion and brotherhood.

A Brotherhood Rekindled

The heartwarming connection between Ostergard and Nay dates back to the early 1970s in Fubonn Province, Vietnam. Here, they formed an unbreakable bond, overcoming language barriers and sharing a mission to provide medical aid to the Montagnard people. After the war, they lost touch, with Nay making one of the last helicopter flights out of Saigon as turmoil engulfed the city in 1975.

“Our platoon was a brotherhood. We fought, lived, and survived together every day,” Nay reminisced. He was delighted at the chance to honor Ostergard by traveling to South Carolina with his wife, Charlene. Nay approached OPFOB with the desire to surprise his old friend, proving that while years may pass, the heart of a soldier remains steadfast.

A Meaningful Legacy

The Sgt. Baez Honor Courage Commitment Award holds significant meaning. Established to commemorate the legacy of Carlos Baez, a beloved marine and a friend of OPFOB’s founder, JR Brown, the award reflects the struggles faced by veterans. Baez’s battle with terminal liver cancer highlighted the need for ongoing support for those returning from service. Sadly, he passed away two weeks prior to the gala, symbolizing the importance of recognizing sacrifices made.

“Carlos meant the world to me,” Brown shared as he explained the award’s origin and purpose. “To keep his name alive through this award signifies that the spirit of service and dedication endures.”

Conclusion

This year’s gala was not just about honoring individual achievements but served as a reminder of the lifelong bonds formed in service. In Ridgeland, community spirit flourishes, and events like these demonstrate the resilience and camaraderie that uplift veterans every day. As Ostergard, Nay, and many others come together, they affirm the promise that through unity and mutual support, no veteran has to face life alone.
