News Summary

Tybee Island is set to host the Orange Crush event on April 19, 2025, marking its first permitted gathering in 30 years. City officials have emphasized enhanced public safety measures including a significant police presence, traffic control, and community engagement. With an anticipated 50,000 attendees, the event highlights continued efforts to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both participants and locals.

Tybee Island Announces Permitted Orange Crush Event with Enhanced Public Safety Measures

Tybee Island officials have announced that the Orange Crush event will take place on April 19, 2025, under a special event permit for the first time in 30 years. This milestone follows an extensive planning process focused on public safety and traffic management.

Event Details

  • Date & Time: April 19, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Location: Beach just north of the pier.
  • Capacity: Anticipated 50,000 attendees.
  • Access: General beach access is free; tickets required for VIP tent access.

Safety and Security Measures

City Manager Brett Bell emphasized that public safety is the top priority. In preparation, the Tybee Island Police Department will deploy approximately 150 officers, with additional support from the Georgia State Patrol and local sheriff’s departments.

  • Budget: $215,000 allocated for security measures.
  • Traffic Control: Road safety checkpoints and street closures will be enforced.
  • Parking: On-street parking will be restricted, and illegally parked vehicles will be towed.
  • Cleanup: A rapid cleanup plan is in place to manage litter post-event.

Event History

Originating in 1988 as a gathering for students from Savannah State University, Orange Crush has historically been an unpermitted event. The recent permit was issued following a conditional approval in January 2025 after meeting specific requirements.

This year, a curfew will be enforced to address safety concerns stemming from past crowd control issues and noise complaints.

Entertainment and Amenities

  • Features: One performance stage, vendor tent, beach chair and umbrella rentals.
  • Performers: Local artists and DJs will provide entertainment throughout the day.
  • Vendor Restrictions: Outside vendors are prohibited on the beach during the event.

Community Engagement

Planning for this event has involved considerable community input to enhance safety and enjoyment for both participants and residents. Mayor Brian West underscored the importance of a structured and safe festival experience this year.

For more updates, City officials will hold a second press conference to relay additional logistical information as the date approaches.
