After a protracted search spanning an entire year, Bret Bell has been officially hired as City Manager by the Tybee Island City Council. Bell is no stranger to the island and its administrative demands, having served the City of Savannah as the Chief of Information and Public Affairs. His appointment comes in the wake of Shawn Gillen, the previous city manager, resigning from the position in September last year.
The council members had employed the services of Baker-Tilly, a reputable consultancy and public accounting firm, to assist in the critical process of finding the most suitable candidate. The consultations yielded Bret Bell, who, thanks to his current position, would not have to travel far to begin his new role.
A visible enthusiasm marked Bell’s acceptance of his new position, with his love for the area playing a significant role in his decision. He recalled fondly that when he first moved to the area in the year 2000, Tybee Island was his home and held his most cherished memories. “I just love the place. I’ve also worked for the City of Savannah for 18 years now, and I’m just ready to challenge myself in a new way. This desire to challenge myself, plus this love of Tybee, just sort of came together when this position opened,” expressed Bell.
The city of Tybee is not just hiring an experienced administrator; they are getting a manager that is well-versed in public information management, internal and administrative functions, as well as innovation and technology. Bell’s tenure in the City of Savannah saw him transition from the public information director to the assistant city manager, and finally, the chief operating officer. His current role involves the management of the city’s innovation and technology and services departments and communications and marketing departments.
Bell’s role officially begins on September 3. His initial plan is to discuss with city organizations, citizens, and leaders about their vision for the community. He intends to clarify the goals and objectives of the island’s citizens and lead the development of work programs to achieve them. “I’m just going to be working on understanding that vision where we want the island to go,” Bell said.
