Tybee Farmers Market: A Summer Respite Away from the Beach

Tybee Farmers Market: A Summer Respite Away from the Beach

A Diversified haven for beach lovers

The bustling city of Savannah, renowned for its captivating scenery and southern charm, is now home to a novel retreat for locals and tourists alike. In the seaside town of Tybee Island, the Tybee Farmers Market offers an escape from the typical summer surf and sand. Offering a range of products from freshly baked goods to handcrafted items, this distinct farmers market is sure to deliver a unique and enjoyable experience.

The Birth of Tybee Farmers Market

Established nine seasons ago by retired couple Steve and Nancy Johnson, the Tybee Farmers Market didn’t just provide a fun, engaging activity – it became a necessity. Initially set up at the American Legion, it quickly outgrew its bounds and found a more fitting home on the grounds of the Historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum.

Expanding Horizons

From its humble beginnings of seven to eight vendors, the market has significantly grown, now hosting up to 40 vendors and generating a waiting list. Striking a balance between upholding traditional farmers market values and introducing unique offerings, the market now includes arts and crafts vendors alongside local nonprofits. This perfect synergy has resulted in a diverse market crowd ranging from loyal locals to a growing number of tourists.

A Thriving Market

The Tybee Island Farmers market showcases an array of appealing vendors, from food to craft. Elena’s Enchanted Kitchen, a local Greek-themed caterer, provides a delightful variety ranging from tantalizing souvlaki to assorted eats that are sure to satisfy your palate. Alongside her, bakers like Le Cafe Gourmet offer their freshly made delicacies.

Food Trucks: A No-Go

The city of Tybee has imposed a restriction on food trucks on the island, maintaining the market’s distinct flavor. The lack of food trucks hasn’t hampered the island’s busy summer season, which attracts large crowds and occasionally results in heavy traffic. Nonetheless, the market ensures an entertaining experience for adults and children alike, offering an alternative to the beach’s sandy vistas.

A Monday Must-Visit!

Operating every Monday from March to October, the Tybee Island Farmers Market presents an opportunity not to be missed. Visitors can explore the Historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum, join in the market’s vibrant ambiance, and unwind from their day at the beach. Despite the limited free parking – available only at the lighthouse grounds during market hours – the market’s popularity has soared, with a growing waitlist of potential vendors.

True Value for Money

Although parking may come at a relatively substantial cost of $4/hour in certain lots, the market offers an incomparable array of unique items, mouthwatering food, and an opportunity to mingle within a vibrant community. So the next time you find yourself in Savannah during the summer, drop by at the Tybee Farmers Market, enjoy the delightful products on offer, indulge in the entertaining diversions, and make the most of your Monday away from the beach.
