Last Friday, Hilton Head Island found itself at the center of an unexpected and curious incident as a routine traffic stop turned into an arrest for prostitution. It all began when a deputy from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling the William Hilton Parkway around 1:30 a.m. when he noticed a white Mercedes sedan leaving the Red Roof Inn. The car was speeding, driving 55 mph in a clearly marked 45 mph zone, and the driver appeared to weave in and out of the lanes, prompting the officer to pull over the vehicle.
When the officer approached the car, he was immediately met with the strong odor of marijuana emanating from the glove box. Inside the vehicle were two individuals: a 45-year-old man from South Carolina and a 38-year-old woman visiting from Jacksonville, Florida. The conversation started off simple enough, with the officer probing how the two knew each other. To the officer’s surprise, the responses didn’t exactly mesh—a Facebook connection from the man and a Tinder match from the woman.
As the deputy continued his investigation, things took a turn. He found an aluminum foil pipe tucked away in the woman’s purse, along with scattered remnants of marijuana throughout the car. But that wasn’t all; there was also a pill bottle located on the driver’s side. The driver claimed the larger blue pills were Viagra, and he oddly tried to speak about it quietly, presumably to avoid sparking any embarrassment for the woman.
When questioned further, the driver struggled to remember his passenger’s name. Scrolling aimlessly through his phone, he tossed out a vague answer about speaking to so many females. Eventually, he allowed the deputy to look at their messages, revealing a series of nude photos exchanged along with an astonishing price list. Initially quoted at $225, the woman had slyly offered a discount to $200 for a half-hour rendezvous, insisting that it was her last weekend on the Island. This led to their planned meet-up in the parking lot of the inn.
The driver admitted to utilizing illegal services from the popular escort site SkipTheGames and even candidly noted that this wasn’t his first experience, having paid for sex once before in Miami. The officer, having gathered enough probable cause, then focused attention back on the woman. He informed her that he believed she was engaged in acts of prostitution and began to handcuff her.
To her dismay, the woman asked the deputy if the man she had been with would also face arrest, suggesting a sense of bewilderment at her predicament. She attempted to justify her actions by referencing how prostitution was legal in other countries, but her arguments fell flat with law enforcement.
Held at the Beaufort County Detention Center, the woman was later granted a surety bond of $1,087.50 on the same day of her arrest. South Carolina has a broad definition of prostitution that includes any person engaging in it, aiding the act, or transporting someone for the purposes of transactional sex. This means both the sex worker and client could face charges.
Staff Sergeant Robert Herlong, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, clarified that the decision not to arrest the male companion came down to “officer discretion.” He described the man as “extremely cooperative” throughout the traffic stop.
Interestingly, while illegal prostitution isn’t uncommon in the U.S., arrests for it are rarely seen in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Ser. Herlong pointed out that proving such cases is tricky given the private, often stigmatized nature of these transactions. Previous incidents have also revealed how difficult it is to bring charges against individuals involved in private sexual arrangements, even in instances where violence was involved.
This incident illuminates the complexities surrounding prostitution, the decisions made in the heat of the moment by law enforcement, and the discretion applied in such cases. With tourism as a driving factor in Hilton Head Island’s economy, cases like these serve as stark reminders of the hidden realities that occasionally emerge, providing a unique story to discuss in this typically serene vacation destination.
