News Summary

Thomas Ravenel, former South Carolina treasurer and reality TV star, has decided not to pursue his governorship ambitions for 2026, citing his responsibilities as a single father. His decision comes as the Republican race heats up with several notable candidates eyeing the open seat following Governor Henry McMaster’s term ending in January 2027. Despite his past political aspirations and a controversial history, Ravenel’s withdrawal shifts focus to emerging contenders in the upcoming South Carolina election.

Charleston News Update: Thomas Ravenel Pulls the Plug on Governor Ambitions

In a surprising twist, Thomas Ravenel, the former South Carolina treasurer and reality TV star, has decided to step away from his recently announced bid for the governorship in 2026. Just days after making his grand declaration to run, he took to his social media to inform followers of his change of heart. In his announcement, Ravenel shared that, as a dedicated single father of three young children, now is simply “not the time” for him to dive into the tumultuous world of politics.

At 62 years old, Ravenel had previously stated his conviction that he could outshine what he referred to as the “lightweights” currently eyeing the gubernatorial seat. The competition is heating up among prominent Republican figures, including Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and Congresswoman Nancy Mace, all of whom are being closely watched as possible contenders in the upcoming race.

Why This Decision Matters

The gubernatorial race in South Carolina is set to be significant, especially since current Governor Henry McMaster’s term is up in January 2027, meaning this will be an open election without an incumbent. This is especially noteworthy as the filing period for candidates hasn’t kicked off yet, which typically begins in early 2026. It means plenty of time for potential candidates to strategize and make the right moves.

Ravenel’s brief flirtation with a gubernatorial run comes after a controversial history in politics. His term as state treasurer was cut short back in 2007 when he had to resign after facing serious legal troubles, including a federal indictment related to drug charges. Following a conviction for cocaine possession, he spent 10 months behind bars. His legal woes didn’t end there. He starred in the popular Bravo reality series “Southern Charm,” but left in 2018 amid serious allegations, including a sexual assault claim. After his exit, he faced more legal repercussions, pleading guilty to third-degree assault and battery, leading to a fine and payment to a charity supporting sexual assault victims.

A Glimpse into Ravenel’s Political Journey

For now, Ravenel is placing his focus on family over politics. This decision marks a significant pivot for someone who had spirited ambitions just moments ago. As the political landscape begins to unfold towards the 2026 elections, the question remains: Who will emerge as the leading candidates? With Ravenel out of the running, it leaves plenty of room for Republicans and possibly others to step forward in a race that is sure to attract a great deal of attention both locally and beyond.
