As the lovely city of Beaufort prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, there’s plenty of news to keep residents in the loop. Grab a cup of cocoa and get comfy, because there are some updates that will help you enjoy this holiday season!
Heads up! The city of Beaufort has announced that all city offices will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, in observance of Thanksgiving. This means you should plan your city-related errands accordingly. Also, let’s not forget about Capital Waste Services. They will be taking a break on Thanksgiving Day as well. If you usually have your trash and recycling picked up on Thursdays, you’re in for a little timetable switch! That service will instead take place on Friday, and Friday’s collection will move to Saturday. Make sure to set reminders so you don’t miss it!
Looking for a fun activity to shake off that turkey-induced slump? Join the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park for their free Junior Ranger Park Explorer Program! It’ll be happening at Camp Saxton on Friday, November 29, anytime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Enjoy a day out in nature while learning how to safely explore wildlife and preserve historic sites. Plus, kids get a chance to earn their Junior Ranger Park Explorer Badge! It’s a fantastic way to connect with the rich history of our region. For details, visit the National Park Service’s website or their Facebook page.
In other local news, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is moving quickly to replace a bridge damaged by Hurricane Debby and Helene in Jasper County. The bridge on U.S. Highway 278 over Beaverdam Creek is getting the attention it needs, ensuring safe travels for everyone. Keep your eyes peeled for updates if you travel that route regularly!
Mark your calendars for a special meeting hosted by Indivisible Beaufort on Saturday, December 14. Advocacy Director Josh Malkin from ACLU-SC will be speaking at the St. Helena Branch Library at 11 a.m. The discussion will focus on upcoming bills in the 2025 South Carolina Legislative Session, and strategies to advocate for the issues that matter most to you. This event is free and open to everyone, so don’t miss out!
As we show our gratitude this month, the Beaufort County Veterans Affairs is promoting Operation Green Light for Veterans. Throughout November, several county buildings, including the Administration Building and the County Courthouse, will be lit green. This is part of a nationwide initiative to support our veterans. It’s a lovely visual reminder to bring our community together and honor those who’ve served. Residents are encouraged to join in by shining green lights at homes and businesses to show their support!
Looking for a job? FEMA is hiring in South Carolina to aid in the recovery effort from Hurricane Helene. They’ve got a variety of positions available that cater to different skill sets, from Civil Rights Specialists to Environmental Preservation experts. These temporary roles could become pivotal in rebuilding our community post-storm. If you’re interested, check out USAjobs.gov for more information on available openings.
On a more local note, Beaufort County Assessor Ebony Sanders is hosting community events at libraries throughout the county. From December 3 to December 16, residents can drop by the libraries to ask questions about real property and engage with the Assessor’s staff. This is a great opportunity to get involved and informed!
Lastly, a friendly reminder that IPW Construction Group will continue its work along Laurel Bay Road. Expect shoulder and lane closures from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday until the end of the year. If you’re in the area, slow down and be mindful of the teams working hard!
Let’s all be thankful this holiday season for our community, its perseverance, and the many ways we can connect and support each other. Happy Thanksgiving, Beaufort!
