As Thanksgiving approaches, the heart of Savannah is filled with warmth, gratitude, and perhaps a bit of stress for those who are trying to make ends meet. While many will gather around a feast with loved ones—offering thanks, sharing stories, and, let’s face it, diving into those delicious stretchy pants—there are still plenty of our neighbors who won’t have that luxury this year. Thankfully, a number of local shelters are stepping up to provide comfort, meals, and a little holiday cheer to those in need.
According to recent findings, food prices in 2024 have soared by nearly 5% compared to last year. This situation is pressing in our beautiful state of Georgia, where 12.8% of the population is facing food insecurity, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. More than ever, communities are banding together to help those who don’t have a permanent roof over their heads or a meal to enjoy.
For anyone eager to lend a hand, there are several opportunities to do just that! The Old Savannah City Mission is gearing up for their 26th Annual Great Day of Thanksgiving on November 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year, they are expecting to serve around 600 people on both Thanksgiving Day and again on November 28th. However, they need support to make this event a success!
Keith Pickleseimer, the development director at Old Savannah City Mission, has shared their extensive needs. They’re on the hunt for 50 turkeys, nearly 1,200 pounds of canned vegetables, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and delicious desserts! Plus, they’ll be assembling 50 food boxes for distribution as well.
“We appeal to the people of Savannah to help those in need,” Pickleseimer said emphatically. “We’re asking this community to add some extra food to their grocery cart. Food they can donate to strangers. Food we need to provide the kindness of a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the desperately poor of Savannah. Food to fill meal boxes for our near-homeless friends and neighbors.”
Beyond food items, they are also requesting gift cards, bicycles, tents, and sleeping bags to provide warmth and joy this holiday season. Donations can be dropped off at the Old Savannah City Mission warehouse at 2414 Bull St. before November 21st. If you want to make a financial donation, that’s certainly welcome too!
But wait, the holiday spirit isn’t stopping there! The Union Mission is hosting a free Thanksgiving meal on November 27th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their headquarters located at 125 Fahm St.. This year’s meal is graciously sponsored by Gulfstream and Sodexo, and all are welcome to join in. Plus, you may find some items in their free clothing closet as well!
And let’s not forget about the Hope on a Plate event organized by Savannah Feed the Hungry, scheduled for November 26th at 4 p.m. This delightful gathering will provide a hot meal along with free turkeys, a farmers’ market, live music, and even registration for empowerment resources. What a great way to help spread joy!
This Thanksgiving, let’s be thankful for what we have while sharing our blessings with those who need it most. Whether it’s a turkey, a warm sleeping bag, or a simple act of kindness, every effort counts in brightening someone else’s day. So as you shop for your own Thanksgiving feast, consider picking up a little extra to help those in our community who need it. Let’s come together and make a difference in Savannah this holiday season!
