Thanksgiving Spirit Shines at Savannah State University with Family, Feasting, and Community Service

Thanksgiving Cheer at Savannah State University

As we gear up for the Thanksgiving holiday, the vibrant campus of Savannah State University (SSU) is buzzing with excitement and preparations! Students are planning their breaks in different ways, and the atmosphere is filled with a sense of gratitude, culinary quests, and some delightful new traditions.

Heading Home

For many, Thanksgiving is a cherished time to reconnect with loved ones. Take Jahniya Francis, a junior majoring in business. She’s skipping town for Louisiana to enjoy quality time with her family. “We always cook together,” Jahniya shares with a warm smile. “It’s a fantastic way to take a break from the stress of the semester.” Isn’t that the spirit of Thanksgiving? A good meal and even better company!

Campus Celebrations

But not all students are making the trek home. Some are choosing to stay back on campus, and they have no plans to let that dampen their festive spirits. Jordan Mikell, a sophomore basketball player, is embracing the opportunity to spend time with his teammates. “I’ll be here with my team, but I’m excited to build our chemistry,” he explained. They’re planning a potluck with the entire team and coaching staff. “It’s not the same as being with family, but it’s still meaningful.” That sounds like a great way to build bonds while enjoying some delicious food!

Food Favorites

Speaking of food, let’s dive into the culinary delights students enjoy during this festive season. While classics like mac and cheese and stuffing are big hits, some dishes, like yams and banana pudding, just don’t seem to make the cut this year. It’s funny how everyone has their favorites and those not-so-favorites on the Thanksgiving table!

Giving Back

Amidst all the feasting and gatherings, some students find this holiday to be a poignant moment to give back to the community. Brent Jordan, a junior, is well aware of the importance of helping others. He’s dedicating his time to volunteering at a local food bank in Savannah. “It’s important to me to use this time to help others. Thanksgiving is about gratitude, and this is my way of showing it,” Brent remarked. His admirable choice reminds us that Thanksgiving isn’t just about getting; it’s also about giving!

A Time for Gratitude

Thanksgiving at Savannah State University beautifully reflects the diverse experiences of its students. Whether they’re traveling home to family, staying on campus creating new traditions, or volunteering their time, these Tigers are making this festive time mean something special. Through shared meals, laughter, and acts of kindness, they are all proving that gratitude can take many forms.

So, here’s to all our SSU Tigers this Thanksgiving! May your days be filled with warmth, joy, and a heaping helping of comfort food. Whether you’re somewhere cozy at home, or creating new memories right here on campus, we hope you have a happy and memorable Thanksgiving!
