As Thanksgiving approaches in Beaufort, SC, the spirit of community shines bright. This charming little town is known for its friendly neighbors who truly look out for one another, especially during the holiday season. And this year, it’s all about bringing folks together at the 31st annual “Orphans and Strays Thanksgiving Dinner” hosted by the ever-popular Hemingway’s and Panini’s on the Waterfront.
Get ready to gather with friends and family on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024! Starting at around 2 PM, Hemingway’s doors will swing open for a delightful free dinner that lasts all afternoon. It’s the perfect opportunity for those who might not have a traditional holiday gathering to come together for some good food and warm company!
The heartwarming tradition kicked off in 1993, initiated by the previous owners of Hemingway’s. Since then, it’s grown tremendously, and after new ownership took over, it has been carried on with the same passion and commitment. According to local business owner Paul Thompson, who also takes the reins at Panini’s, this event attracts over 150 locals and visitors each year. And what’s even more admirable is Thompson’s decision to close Panini’s on this special day to help prepare meals for those in need!
Thompson shared, “We greatly appreciate all of our regular patrons who have returned over the past 10-plus years to Panini’s to celebrate with family and enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner.” Instead of running his restaurant, he’s focused on cooking several smoked turkeys and hams at Hemingway’s, fueling the holiday spirit for those without a place to go. “It’s a great tradition in its 31st year, and we love when our locals and visitors come together for a holiday dinner,” he added.
This Thanksgiving dinner isn’t just about the food—it’s a true potluck! Regular attendees can bring a side dish to share, while Hemingway’s and Panini’s generously provide the main courses like turkeys, hams, mac & cheese, and salads. While it’s not mandatory to bring anything, the food is free for everyone to enjoy. So come hungry and ready to mingle! Plus, you won’t want to miss the live entertainment, which brings another layer of joy to this community gathering.
While the free dinner starts at 2 PM, the full bar will remain open until 1:30 AM, providing a nice way to wind down after the big feast. And to top it all off, Campfire Tyler, a local talent, has kindly agreed to perform at the dinner, sharing his music while giving back to the community. Thompson expressed gratitude for Tyler, saying, “Hopefully, the weather will be nice so we can have outside entertainment.”
For many, Thanksgiving has become synonymous with delicious food and quality time spent around the TV watching football. However, others take a moment to reflect on the deeper meaning of the holiday—being grateful for the love, friendship, and community around them. This event not only fills bellies but also warms hearts, encouraging everyone to embrace the true essence of Thanksgiving.
Paul Thompson has exciting news: because of the growing popularity of the Orphans and Strays Thanksgiving event, they plan to extend the celebration to Christmas Day as well, welcoming everyone to join in the festivity.
Hemingway’s Bistro is located at 920 Bay Street (Rear) at downtown Beaufort’s Waterfront Park. This Thanksgiving, whether you’re a local or just visiting, everyone is invited to take part in the special celebration of kindness and community spirit. It’s a day not just to fill your plate, but to fill your heart—as we all come together for a beautiful day of thanks. See you there!
