In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the community, Burton, a small but vibrant town, has been reeling following the tragic shooting of a 17-year-old girl, Ari’Anna Mulligan. This recent event has left family members and friends mourning the loss of a young life that was just beginning to bloom as she entered her senior year of high school.
Ari’Anna was not just any teenager; she had dreams and aspirations. Having previously attended Whale Branch College Early High School, she had recently made the transition to Bridges Preparatory School, where she was excited to start her final year. Those who knew her described her as a bright and cheerful girl who brought joy to those around her. Sadly, her life was taken far too soon amid a chaotic scene that unfolded on the night of September 15.
On that fateful evening, around 10 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports of gunfire coming from the Magnolia Park Apartments, located off Laurel Bay Road. Responding deputies arrived to find Ari’Anna and two other minors in critical condition, having sustained gunshot wounds. The situation escalated quickly, and despite efforts to save her, Ari’Anna was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on September 16.
The local coroner, David Ott, who provided the timeline of events, stated that Ari’Anna was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina, but sadly, her injuries were too severe. It remains unclear how many times she was shot, leaving many in the community grappling with unanswered questions about that tragic night.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement officials worked tirelessly to unravel the details surrounding the shooting. On October 4, police arrested a fourth suspect in connection with this heartbreaking case. Derrick Jerrod McKee, 17, from Beaufort, has since been charged with murder, as well as aggravated breach of peace and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. This arrest follows the apprehension of three others: 18-year-olds Jeremiah Warren and Rashod Lorenzo Williams, along with 23-year-old Storm Lemont Zop Polite. All four suspects face serious charges in connection to Ari’Anna’s untimely death.
Despite the recent arrests, significant questions remain unanswered. As of now, authorities have not detailed the relationship between the suspects and Ari’Anna, leaving a veil of mystery hanging over the case. Master Sgt. Danny Allen, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, has indicated that there may be further arrests linked to this incident, hinting at a more complex situation than initially thought.
While two of the suspects remain in the Beaufort County Detention Center as the investigation continues, the community stands united in grief. Residents are encouraged to reach out to local officials with any additional information regarding the case, as every piece may be vital in bringing closure to Ari’Anna’s family and friends.
As candles flicker in memory of Ari’Anna, her story highlights the challenges that young people face in our society today. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of violence in our communities. As the investigation unfolds, we can only hope that justice will be served, and that the memories of Ari’Anna Mulligan will be cherished and celebrated as her family and friends strive to keep her spirit alive.
