Community feedback is encouraged through March 27, with a finalized concept expected by late 2025.

Talmadge Memorial Bridge Future Discussed in Savannah

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is in the process of gathering public input regarding the future of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge.

Public Engagement Event

A second round of public engagement was held recently, where concepts for a tunnel or a new bridge were presented at an open house event attended by approximately 75 to 80 residents.

Proposed Plans

Key highlights from the proposed crossing options include:

  • The new access points will be shifted south to Louisville Road, which is set to be expanded to two lanes in each direction.
  • The new bridge would feature a clearance of 230 feet, an increase from the current 185 feet.
  • The tunnel would run beneath the Savannah River channel and the Floridan Aquifer.

Community Concerns

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson has expressed concerns over potential impacts on downtown landscapes and neighborhoods. Additionally, some residents advocate for an eastside bridge option to help reduce truck traffic in the area.

Operational Limitations

Currently, the Talmadge Memorial Bridge’s clearance limits operations at the Port of Savannah:

  • It accommodates ships with a capacity of around 15,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs).
  • Modern container ships can carry up to 23,000 TEUs.

Project Development

GDOT has assessed 27 crossing options, with only the tunnel and new bridge moving forward for detailed evaluation. Expected costs for these projects are:

  • Up to $2 billion for the tunnel.
  • As high as $1.17 billion for the new bridge.

The agency aims to present a finalized concept by the end of 2025 and is committed to addressing community and environmental concerns throughout the planning process.

Feedback Opportunities

Residents can share their feedback online until March 27. Project materials are available on GDOT’s project website.

Maintenance Update

A separate maintenance project for the Talmadge Bridge, estimated at $189 million, is set to begin soon. This project will focus on cable and infrastructure replacements to slightly enhance bridge clearance.
