South Beach Marina in Hilton Head is set for a major transformation, with demolition work soon to begin on its northern end. The iconic bright red, white, and blue walls will be removed as part of a facelift led by Tim Stearns, COO of South Beach Management Group. Key attractions like the Salty Dog Cafe will remain untouched, while newly envisioned restaurants and retail shops are on the horizon. Temporary safety fencing is already in place to protect visitors during the renovation process, which aims to streamline the marina experience.
Hilton Head, get ready for some big changes! The northern end of the South Beach Marina in Sea Pines is about to undergo a major transformation. Soon, the bright red, white, and blue walls that have greeted visitors for years will be coming down, making way for a fresh new look.
In a move to revamp the marina, important demolition work is set to kick off shortly. This exciting project will not only see the iconic walls removed but also includes taking down the roof, staircases, and those inviting windows facing scenic Braddock Cove. Tim Stearns, the Chief Operating Officer of the South Beach Management Group, is leading the charge on this renovation project, and anticipation is high as demolition is expected to start soon.
Don’t worry, though! The beloved Salty Dog Cafe, which has been serving up bites since 1987, will remain untouched during this phase. This cafe has become a staple tourist attraction and continues to draw crowds, so the southern side of the property is safe for now.
Other structures around the marina like Land’s End Tavern, the General Store, and Blue Water Tackle Shop will also escape the wrecking ball, continuing to provide services that guests love. Even those sweet treats from the ice cream factory and the popular t-shirt shop are staying put!
To ensure everyone’s safety during this transformation, temporary green fencing has been put up around the northern side of the marina where demolition will take place. The fenced-off area stretches from the Island Water Sports building going all the way through the remaining northern property. This effort will keep visitors safe while they watch the changes unfold!
So, what can everyone look forward to? Exciting plans are on the horizon! Buildings currently housing South Beach Inn and Jake’s Cargo will be repurposed into new restaurants and retail shops. Gone will be their days as lodging establishments, allowing for a fresh take on what the marina has to offer.
The countdown to demolition is being watched closely! The Salty Dog Cafe’s website even hosts a live camera to share each moment of the upcoming changes. Originally set for Thursday at around 10 a.m., the countdown timer has now changed, indicating demolition will take place in just five days. Everyone’s buzzing with excitement!
This renovation is not just cosmetic; it’s going to reshape how the marina operates. The total building area will be reduced significantly—from about 12,500 square feet down to roughly 10,000 square feet. This means a more streamlined and attractive marina experience for everyone.
To improve convenience, plans are in place to create a new vehicle drop-off area near the marina, making it easier for visitors to hop off and explore what South Beach has to offer. The Sea Pines Architectural Review Board has already given the thumbs up for these plans, with approval from the town of Hilton Head coming shortly thereafter.
Lastly, as renovations take place, the swimming pool and additional establishments will remain closed for the upcoming 2024 season. This includes The Wreck of the Salty Dog, so visitors will need to plan their visits considering these temporary closures.
Change can be challenging, but it’s also thrilling! Hilton Head is on the brink of something beautiful with the redevelopment of South Beach Marina. In the coming months, the community will witness a major evolution of this cherished landmark, and many can’t wait to see what’s next!
