Beaufort County Opens Storm Shelters Amidst Tropical Storm Debby

Beaufort County Opens Storm Shelters amidst Tropical Storm Debby

In response to the escalating threat of Tropical Storm Debby, Beaufort County has opened two storm shelters to aid those most affected by the severe weather condition. The heavy rain has prompted the authorities to open these facilities, providing residents an immediate respite.

Shelter Locations

The two newly opened shelters are sited at Battery Creek High School that can be found at 1 Blue Dolphin Drive in Burton and the other one at Bluffton Middle School located at 30 New Mustang Drive in Bluffton.

It is essential to note that these shelters have limited resources and do not accept pets. Anyone seeking refuge in these facilities are requested to bring their own supplies, including food and water.

Additional Shelter in Jasper County

An additional storm shelter is open in neighboring Jasper County at Ridgeland Elementary School. This specific shelter is more equipped as it is pet-friendly and accommodates special needs.

For storm-related enquiries, citizens can reach out to the Emergency Management Division at 843-255-4000. If there is a need to report a storm-related incident or assistance is required, the non-emergency number dispatch line is 843-524-2777.

Tropical Storm Debby’s Impact

The arrival of Tropical Storm Debby has led to drastic weather changes, with parts of the county bearing the brunt of over a foot of rainfall. As a preventive measure, several schedule changes have been announced and possible tornado sightings in Charleston, Berkeley, and Colleton Counties are under inspection.

Moreover, road closures have ensued due to flooding across the Tri-County area and a State of Emergency has been proclaimed for South Carolina. The City of Charleston has already declared a curfew preceding the storm.

Precautionary Measures

To further enhance the preventive measures, the sanctioning of sandbags has been arranged. In Colleton County, firefighters are encouraging people living near a vulnerable dam to evacuate the area as soon as possible.

As Tropical Storm Debby paves its way closer, all are encouraged to prioritize safety, heed the warnings and measures put in place by local authorities, and ensure to stay updated with the latest news regarding the storm’s progress.
