Heavy rainfall in South Carolina has led to significant disruptions in school schedules across the region. On Thursday, all Orangeburg County schools were canceled, reflecting the district’s commitment to the safety of its students and staff.
Initially, the district had planned to operate on a three-hour delay, allowing some time for conditions to improve. However, officials quickly reassessed the situation, recognizing that ongoing weather challenges necessitated a complete closure for the day. In an official statement, the district emphasized that ensuring the well-being of students and staff was their top priority.
In contrast to Orangeburg County, the neighboring Calhoun County Public School District opted for a two-hour delay for its bus schedules. However, schools within Calhoun County remain open for car riders, highlighting varying responses to the severe weather. The decision to delay rather than cancel indicates that officials there felt conditions were manageable enough for some students to attend school.
Orangeburg County officials cited multiple reasons for the school cancellations. Difficult road conditions, the state of certain school buildings, and the continuing adverse weather were noted as significant concerns. Many roads in the area have become challenging to navigate due to flooding. A flood warning remains in effect in Orangeburg County until 12:45 p.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued a flood watch, lasting until 7 p.m., for the region.
“Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” the NWS stated. Residents in affected areas are cautioned that flooding could occur in urban areas and places with poor drainage.
The flood warning not only affects Orangeburg County but also extends to parts of Richland, Lexington, Sumter, Calhoun, and Clarendon counties. Recent rainfall in the Midlands region has varied between six inches and a foot, leaving many areas susceptible to flooding. Fortunately, forecasts suggest that little to no additional rainfall is expected in the coming days.
As the situation develops, Orangeburg County schools have not yet announced whether classes will resume on a regular schedule on Friday. School officials are actively monitoring conditions and will provide updates as they become available. In their communication, they have urged everyone to stay safe during these unpredictable weather conditions.
School officials concluded their message by thanking the community for their understanding and cooperation during this weather-related disruption. Parents and students are encouraged to keep an eye on further announcements regarding school operations.
This situation highlights the importance of flexibility in educational planning during severe weather, reminding the community of the need to prioritize safety as they navigate these challenging circumstances.
