SCAD Senior Showcases Feature Spellbinding Student Artworks
In Savannah, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) concluded its academic year with a dazzling display of senior student artworks. The University’s graduating class of 2024 recently exhibited their culminating pieces of art at the senior showcase, held at the university’s Alexander Hall gallery.
A Celebration of Art and Achievement
This year, 45 painting majors graduated from the school of fine arts. The showcase served as a symbol of their artistic and academic accomplishments throughout their time at SCAD, as well as a festive occasion leading up to commencement. Honor Bowman, the Dean of the School of Fine Arts, highlights SCAD’s painting program for its unique scope in preparing students for their post-graduate careers.
“The painting major at SCAD is growing, and I believe the reason is because in 2024, the most relevant skill set an artist can have is humanity and individuality,” said Bowman. “Our program teaches creative and critical thinking, and the development of artistic ideas.”
From Classroom to Career
Besides painting, Bowman notes that the curriculum prepares students for a variety of roles in the art world, such as curators, gallerists, entrepreneurs, art directors, and service designers. She takes pride in the hardwork, independent voices, and determined minds of the graduating students and believes in their potential to excel in any field.
Creating Personal Narratives
The successful completion of their senior showcase boils down to the effective capture of their individual artistic voices. For instance, Malikah Tamirah, one of the graduating students, derived her inspiration from her experience as a Black woman growing up in the American South. Her painting, titled “Field Trip to Broughton Street,” presents a vibrant snapshot of Black young adulthood.
On the other hand, Haley Bullington chose a more abstract approach for her senior project. Drawing from her past as a gymnast, she depicted the astounding body movements in a series of lines and shapes. Though different in style and substance, both narratives were equally compelling, and the showcase was a resounding success.
Preparing for Future Endeavors
Looking forward to their professional journeys post-graduation, both Tamirah and Bullington have set their sights on graduate education. Bullington plans to return to Houston, Texas, to join Sotheby’s online business program. Tamirah, on the other hand, aims to establish herself in Atlanta’s thriving art scene.
