Savannah Schools Implement Closures and Online Classes as Hurricane Milton Approaches

Savannah Schools Prepare for Hurricane Milton

As Hurricane Milton edges closer, residents in Savannah, Georgia, are gearing up for the storm’s impact. Schools across the Savannah-Lowcountry region are taking necessary precautions, with some opting to close their doors or move classes online. Here’s a roundup of what families can expect as the storm approaches.

School Closures and Virtual Learning

The Bryan County School District has announced that all schools will close on Thursday, October 10. This includes the cancellation of community education classes. As a reminder, students had already planned days off for Thursday and Friday, October 11, so they won’t miss any additional school time.

In Richmond Hill, schools will also be closed on Thursday. The district is prioritizing safety and will keep parents in the loop about any updates regarding athletics or extracurricular activities.

Meanwhile, the College of Coastal Georgia will transition all classes to an online format on Thursday, October 10. Faculty and staff will have reduced operations for the day but are expected to resume normal activities on Friday.

Precautionary Measures Across the Region

In Jasper County, schools will conduct eLearning and remote work on October 10. District facilities will be closed, ensuring everyone’s safety as the storm approaches. Similarly, the Liberty County School System will close that day, with all after-school activities also canceled. Officials noted that wind gusts associated with the hurricane could pose risks for transportation.

The Long County School System is taking similar precautions. They announced school and administrative offices would also be closed due to the concerns of hazardous conditions caused by Hurricane Milton. They hope to be back up and running on Friday, just like many others in the area.

Individual School Updates

Students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System will experience an asynchronous E-Learning Day for Thursday. Staff members will also work off-site, allowing families some flexibility during the storm. The following Monday, October 14, will be part of the scheduled Fall Break, and there will be no extra school days added for students.

Betting they will be able to return to normal by Friday, the Georgia Southern University campuses in Armstrong and Liberty will conduct classes remotely on October 10 but will run as normal at the Statesboro campus.

The Wayne County School System plans to cancel classes on Thursday but is hopeful to resume a regular schedule on Friday. Over at Toombs County, students are expected to return to school by October 15, giving them a bit of breathing room to ensure conditions are safe.

Storm’s Impact Still Felt

And we can’t forget the lingering effects from Hurricane Helene. The Appling County Schools remain closed due to damage from the previous storm, as over half of EMC customers there are still without power. This shows just how much recovery is still needed from the last event, so officials will keep an eye on conditions and inform the public accordingly next week.

School districts from across the region are united in prioritizing safety above all else as Hurricane Milton approaches. It’s essential for families to stay informed and connected with their respective schools for real-time updates as the storm develops. Keep safe, Savannah! Together, we’ve got this!
