Savannah Wins $9.9 Million Grant for Essential Road Safety Improvements

Savannah Secures Major Grant for Road Safety Enhancements

In an exciting announcement for the bustling city of Savannah, Georgia, local officials, along with a senior official from the White House, are set to celebrate a significant achievement in road safety enhancement. On Thursday, October 31, Tom Perez, a Senior White House Advisor, will join Savannah’s Mayor Van R. Johnson II and other state officials to honor the receipt of a $9.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

The Grant’s Purpose

This substantial funding is aimed at improving safety at intersections along 37th Street, a critical east-west connector that links central Savannah to Interstate 16. The need for such improvements became glaringly evident when the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan identified 37th Street as part of a high-injury network—a designation stemming from the astounding 970 crashes reported between 2018 and 2022 alone.

The grant is part of the DOT’s broader initiative called the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, which allocates a whopping $1 billion for roadway safety enhancements across the country, stemming from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. Savannah’s successful application was among 354 local, regional, and tribal communities that received funding, all with the shared goal of enhancing roadway safety and preventing future accidents.

A Collaborative Effort

City officials are particularly enthusiastic about this project, as they will be matching the federal grant with another $2.4 million, bringing the total investment in road safety improvements to $12.3 million. This collaborative approach emphasizes Savannah’s commitment to prioritizing safety, especially in areas that see high traffic incidents.

During the celebration, Tom Perez, along with Ann Purcell, chair of the Georgia State Transportation Board, and Savannah City Manager Joseph A. Melder, will share their insights and perspectives on this important development. This gathering not only marks a financial investment but also serves as a communal reminder of the shared responsibility in keeping Savannah’s roads safe for everyone.

Looking Ahead

The Vision Zero Program, which aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all, has played a crucial role in identifying high-risk areas and proposing effective interventions. The completion of these enhancements along 37th Street will not only improve safety for drivers but also for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a more inclusive transportation environment.

This grant celebration comes at a time when cities across the nation are increasingly recognizing the need for improved infrastructural safety measures. With the lessons learned from past accidents, city planners and officials are more determined than ever to create safer, more efficient roadways. The spotlight on Savannah, thanks to this grant, positions the city as a leader in proactive safety measures and urban planning strategies.

As the community gears up for the upcoming celebration, the local sentiment is buzzing with optimism about the future. Residents understand the importance of such funding in fostering a safer living environment and are encouraged by the recognition that their needs are being prioritized on a national level.

Final Thoughts

In a world where road safety is paramount, this milestone for Savannah is not just a victory for local officials but a triumph for every citizen who uses the roads. With continued governmental support and community advocacy, there’s hope for even more transformative safety enhancements down the line. Let’s celebrate this win together!
