Savannah Photo Club Fosters Community and Creativity Through Monthly Photo Walks

Discovering Community Through the Lens in Savannah

In the charming city of Savannah, where the streets are brimming with history and vibrant landscapes, a remarkable movement has emerged from the heart of its community. The Savannah Photo Club is quickly becoming a beloved haven for photography enthusiasts, both old and new. Founded by a trio of passionate individuals, namely Daniel White, Joshua Lindsey, and Randall Lyvers, this club is more than just a gathering of shutterbugs — it’s a place where friendships blossom and skills flourish.

A Growing Community of Creatives

What started less than a year ago with only 10 members has now blossomed into a bustling collective of over 50 participants. This growth is a testament to Savannah’s desire for connections and shared experiences. “I love hearing someone who hasn’t picked up their camera in a long time say they were inspired to [do so] because of the club. Reigniting someone’s passion in the craft — that, to me, is the best thing,” shared Lyvers.

Each month, on the third Sunday, the Savannah Photo Club hosts a mesmerizing photo walk. The meetups launch from various local hotspots such as Float Coffee in the Starland District, Origin Coffee Bar in west Savannah, and PERC Coffee, which proudly held the title of 2024 Runner-Up Best Coffee Roaster.

Taking the First Steps into a New City

For newcomers like Zach Waller, who moved to Savannah without prior connections, the photo walks have proven incredibly beneficial. “I just took out my Fujifilm X-T5 and started snapping portraits of fellow members,” said Waller, emphasizing how the club welcomes photographers of all skill levels. Even those just beginning their photography journey find a sense of belonging here. One member revealed that they picked up their camera again just last October.

The inclusivity extends to the variety of photographic gear present at the meetups. It’s not uncommon to see cutting-edge digital cameras mixed with unique gems like the Lomography Colorsplash, known for its vibrant, trippy effects. Even smartphones join the lineup, proving that it’s all about the passion for photography, not the equipment used.

Finding Friendship and Fun

Among the ever-welcoming atmosphere, members like Clinton Edminster, owner of Waters Café, attend with an endearing old film camera that operates only one-third of the time. “It’s about the joy of capturing moments, not necessarily the technology,” Edminster shared cheerfully.

Another newcomer, Lozzie Kennedy, emphasized the importance of such gatherings for forming friendships as an adult. “When you’re not in school, where do you meet people with similar interests? Here, everyone understands why we do strange things like get on the ground or climb a tree to get the perfect shot,” she remarked, clearly appreciating the creative vibes.

Building Connections Through Creativity

After mingling and enjoying their favorite beverages for about an hour, the Savannah Photo Club tends to take a group photo to commemorate their gathering — after all, what would a photo club be without a little capturing of moments? From there, members split off in various directions, enthusiastically snapping shots of each other and the stunning surroundings of Savannah.

Not only is the club helping members improve their photography skills, but it also paves the way for them to explore the diverse neighborhoods of Savannah in a unique light. Some participants have even taken the plunge to ask strangers for portraits, adding a whole new dimension to their photography experience.

Lyvers reflected on the most rewarding moments, saying, “I love witnessing the rekindling of passion among participants. It’s heartwarming to see how this club inspires individuals to pick up their cameras and embrace their creativity.”
