Excitement Builds in Savannah for a Soulful Evening with the Sensational Barnes Brothers

Savannah is buzzing with anticipation as the Savannah Music Festival gears up to feature the talented Sensational Barnes Brothers at District Live on September 20 at 8 p.m. If you haven’t heard of these guys yet, you’re in for a treat. Brothers Chris and Courtney Barnes are set to bring a rousing performance filled with soulful tunes that will have everyone in the audience on their feet!

Growing Up in a Musical Family

Chris and Courtney hail from Memphis, Tennessee, a city known for its rich musical heritage. The brothers grew up in a household steeped in music, with their father, Calvin “Duke” Barnes, and mother, Deborah, leading a family musical act that included Chris, Courtney, and their siblings. Deborah’s musical roots run deep; she was the daughter of Rev. James L. Gleese, who founded the Beale Street Mission, and even sang backup for the legendary Ray Charles as a Raelette.

“My mother is definitely a huge part of our influence and inspiration and who you hear as the Sensational Barnes Brothers today,” Courtney said during a recent phone interview. The brothers intend to include their mother in a few aspects of their upcoming performances since fans are eager to hear her story.

A Musical Journey Begins

The musical journey for Chris and Courtney started at a young age. They were just children when they began performing with their parents and siblings. Chris was only 10 years old and Courtney was just 6 when they took the stage. “Courtney immediately became a lead singer,” Chris recalls, chuckling, “the youngest always gets the most talent!” It’s clear the musical spark was ignited early on, and it has only grown brighter over the years.

The Dynamic Duo

As adults, the brothers have developed a strong synergy as they work together, creating a sound that is uniquely their own. Chris explains, “I think we have the same tone, timbre and voice. Courtney, in my opinion, is a better singer than I am, technically. We complement each other because we’ve been together for so long.” This chemistry is evident in their performances, especially during playful moments in their shows, where improvisation and spontaneity shine through.

Diverse Musical Ventures

Though they’ve always collaborated with each other, the Barnes brothers have also ventured into various musical projects outside of the family band. Courtney played in a rock band while Chris has lent his voice to several renowned acts. Together, they’ve even contributed backing vocals to Don Bryant’s Grammy-nominated album, “Don’t Give Up Love.” With a diverse background that includes fronting a funk band called Black Cream, working alongside Larry Dobson of the Bar Kays, and collaborating with artists from different genres, their journey has been nothing short of exciting!

The Birth of the Sensational Barnes Brothers

The big break for the duo came when they joined forces with Bruce Watson of Fat Possum Records. Recognizing their Memphis gospel influences, he suggested they record songs from the now-defunct Designer Records label. “It was a shot in the dark,” Chris admitted, “but after we began recording, it took off. People love the sound, the old way of playing music, combined with our vocal stylings.”

What’s on the Horizon

Now, the Sensational Barnes Brothers are back in the studio, working on an album set to release later this year. This self-produced project will feature their seven-piece touring band, which includes their brother Calvin as Music Director and sister Carla as backup vocalist. “We wanted to put out something that is all ours so people can really understand what we do,” Chris shared.

A Night to Remember

Fans at District Live can expect a blend of new material and classic gospel, paired with unexpected covers of songs by artists like Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. Chris encourages everyone to “be ready to dance and have a good time. Have an open mind and an open heart.” With the special connection the Barnes brothers have to Memphis and their beautiful storytelling through music, this is a show you won’t want to miss!

Mark your calendars for what promises to be a truly memorable evening with the Sensational Barnes Brothers this September!
