Savannah’s Murders Surge Threefold as Compared to Last Year’s Numbers
Latest crime statistics from the municipality paint a grim picture
The year 2024 has been a challenging one for Savannah, as the city’s murder tally in the first half of the year has reached three times higher than it was during the same period in 2023. As per the latest data from Savannah Police Department (SPD), the city has recorded 18 homicides since the start of this year. Contrarily, at the halfway point of 2023, the homicide count was just six.
The SPD disseminates regular updates on crime statistics, with the current data revealing an alarming upward trend in homicides. The updated figures were extracted from a crime report for the week ending July 6, 2024.
Current Crime Fray in Savannah
As per the recent report, the total count of homicides for 2024 was initially recorded as 17. However, with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy on July 7, the annual homicide tally went up to 18. Back in 2022, the SPD reported a total of 32 homicides, out of which, 17 had taken place before Independence Day.
Meanwhile, in the current year, the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) has recorded three homicides as highlighted in its latest report for the week ending July 9. This is the same number of homicides reported by CCPD at this time in 2023.
Police Actions: Response and Apprehensions
The law enforcement departments of Savannah have been vigilantly responding to the escalating crime rate. On July 9, SPD announced the arrest of a 19-year-old male suspect in connection to the fatal shooting incident on July 7. The suspect, Dawontay Williams, has been charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault. He was taken into custody by Savannah Police on July 8.
In another incident, on July 12, SPD briefed the public about a shooting that took place near President Street. Fortunately, this shooting incident was not fatal. An adult female was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound on her leg. The investigation regarding this incident is ongoing.
The Historical Pattern – A Comparative Look
Comparing the historical data, in 2023, the SPD reported a total of 28 homicides. On the other hand, the beginning of 2020 saw Savannah reporting its highest homicide rate in recent memory. The first five months of 2020 witnessed 17 homicides.
