Historic Savannah Mile Race Returns After Five-Year Hiatus
Savannah, GA – The historic downtown Savannah will once again host the Savannah Mile on May 18, 2024. The event, organized by the 200 Club, is set to commence at 8 a.m. and marks its return after a hiatus since 2019. The race takes place during National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week and serves as an essential fundraiser for the club.
The Backdrop of Savannah Mile
The Savannah Mile 2024 kicks off on the southern end of Forsyth Park, taking participants along Drayton Street until the conclusion on Broughton Street. The long-awaited event is a firm favorite in the annual Savannah sports calendar and carries profound significance among the first responder community. The return of this event to the city’s downtown area underscores its central place in the community.
Expressing his elation for the comeback of the Savannah Mile, Mayor Van R. Johnson, II said, “We are very excited to see the Savannah Mile back in downtown Savannah this year, where it belongs.” He further appreciated the 200 Club’s efforts to support first responders’ families, affirming, “As a former law enforcement officer and a current elected official, I have seen firsthand the great work that the 200 Club does.”
The 200 Club and Its Beneficial Work
Established to assist the families of fallen first responders, the 200 Club is a non-profit organization that provides substantial financial help and a completely paid college education. The Savannah Mile is one of the Club’s significant fundraising events, making it a linchpin in its charitable activities.
Race Divisions
The Savannah Mile 2024 features six heats accommodating all ages and abilities. These heats include family and age groups, concluding with a Memory Walk. The Memory Walk is a solemn event where families of fallen heroes get to walk a mile in memory and honor of their loved ones.
Further enhancing the drama of this day is the final race, dubbed the Heroes Heat. Here, all military personnel and first responders can participate, with those donning full gear of 30 pounds or more competing for the coveted ‘Full Gear All Out Flag.’
The race proceedings wrap up with an awards celebration at Johnson Square. Attendees can enjoy complimentary food and beverages in the scenic square while awaiting the announcement of the race times.
