Hey there, Savannah! If you’re looking for a fun, engaging way to spend a day with your family, you’re in luck! This Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Telfair Museums is hosting a delightful Free Family Day at the Jepson Center, located at 207 W York Street. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families to dive into the world of art and creativity, all while celebrating a brand new exhibition titled Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood.

Art Activities Await!

Families can look forward to a whole variety of hands-on art-making activities that promise to spark creativity! Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., there are four special art activities lined up that dive into themes of narrative art, nursery rhymes, and even portraiture. Talk about enriching fun!

But that’s not all! There will also be a selfie station and family reading sessions nestled right within the Rockwell Exhibition. Imagine capturing those precious family moments in such a vibrant atmosphere! Plus, you’ll get the chance to meet some incredible illustrators who will be sharing their talents throughout the afternoon.

Meet The Illustrators!

Among the featured artists are Jennifer Mack Watkins, Rashad Doucet, and Nancy So Miller. All of them are incredibly talented and have put in a lot of hard work to make their dreams come true in the world of illustration.

Let’s start with Jennifer Mack Watkins. She has a stunning educational background, with a BA in Studio Arts and an MFA in Printmaking. Her artwork has been showcased in notable institutions like the Smithsonian and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is quite impressive! Plus, she recently illustrated a lovely children’s book that’s already receiving rave reviews.

Next up is Rashad Doucet! This talented comic artist hails from Louisiana and has a knack for drawing comics that resonate with many. From working with well-known publishers to teaching at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Rashad is making his mark in the art world. Be sure not to miss his presentation!

Finally, meet Nancy So Miller, a talented Korean American author and illustrator. She loves creating tiny, magical worlds that capture the essence of childhood. Nancy’s work isn’t just for looks; it’s about conveying a story and emotion. Her latest book retells a magical Korean folktale, which sounds absolutely enchanting!

Free Admission for Everyone!

Excitingly, free admission to the Jepson Center is available for all residents of Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, Bulloch, Beaufort, and Jasper Counties. What a wonderful way to allow families in the community to engage with the arts without breaking the bank!

Harry Delorme, the Director of Education and Senior Curator at Telfair Museums, emphasizes the importance of making art accessible. “Opening our exhibitions and artistic activities to our community on a regular basis, free of charge, is important to Telfair Museums,” he shared. With this weekend’s offerings, they anticipate a big turnout—so don’t miss out!

A Treasure Trove of Art History

Telfair Museums holds a special place in Savannah’s heart, opening its doors way back in 1886. As the oldest public art museum in the South and the first established by a woman in the U.S., it features a world-class collection that howls its charm right in the National Historic Landmark District. It encompasses three sites, including the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, and the Telfair Academy.

So gather your family and come on down to the Jepson Center this Saturday for a day packed with art, creativity, and fun! You won’t want to miss out on this perfect chance to inspire young minds and celebrate the joy of art in all its forms!
