Savannah Film Gains Traction on The Black List

Savannah-native Alex Yarber has garnered attention for his feature film project, “A Low Country Crime Story,” recently included in The Black List’s Georgia List.

Yarber, an alumnus of the University of Georgia, found inspiration for his film during summers spent working at a seafood restaurant on Tybee Island. The film tells the story of two waitresses caught in a cycle of debt and unfulfilled aspirations.

  • The narrative intensifies when the waitresses stumble upon stolen money and hatch a risky plan that leads them into a perilous underworld.
  • Yarber aims to authentically depict the dynamics and economic challenges faced by restaurant workers, highlighting how these struggles create tension and conflict.

The film seeks to present an authentic representation of life on Tybee Island, setting it apart from the usual tourist-centric depictions. Yarber wishes to showcase less-explored, rugged aspects of Savannah, a city often associated with the film “Forrest Gump.”

  • The Black List is known for spotlighting unproduced scripts, with many previous selections winning prestigious awards, including four Best Picture Oscars.
  • The Georgia List aims to promote visibility and mentorship for Georgia-based writers, featuring the top ten unproduced scripts.

Following this recognition, Yarber plans to pursue financing for his film through production companies, grants, and local investors in Savannah. He hopes to cultivate local investment support for filmmakers from the area.

Yarber holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University and has previously showcased his short film “Works of Mercy” at various film festivals, including the Academy Awards-qualifying Florida Film Festival.
