The latest report reveals that we’ve seen a whopping 20% decrease in violent crimes for the year 2024 compared to last year. Yes, you read that right! And if we look back even further, that’s a stunning 21% drop since 2022. Now that deserves a round of applause!
Let’s dig deeper into the statistics. The number of homicides has taken a turn for the better, dropping from 32 in 2022 to 28 in 2023, and down to 26 in 2024. That’s fewer families and friends grieving, which is certainly a step in the right direction. Additionally, there has been an 18% reduction in aggravated assaults from 2023 and a 16% decline compared to 2022. These figures are promising, indeed!
Savannah wasn’t just focused on violent crimes this past year; property crimes also saw a decrease. There’s a 7% drop from 2023 and a staggering 16% drop from 2022, showcasing the efforts made in keeping our community safe. However, there’s a little hiccup in the report as commercial burglaries spiked by 37%, and yard thefts increased by 6%. So, let’s keep an eye on securing our homes and belongings.
When it comes to vehicle-related incidents, entering autos decreased by 18% in 2024, which is encouraging. Still, the reports revealed some disappointing news: the number of guns stolen from vehicles actually increased, with 266 weapons reported missing in 2024 compared to 241 in 2023. Their efforts through various programs like the Savannah Impact Program (SIP) made a significant difference, serving 350 families, making 120 school visits, and even helping expunge records for 200 individuals. This type of outreach can truly change lives!
Additionally, SPD is not just relying on good old-fashioned community spirit. They’re making excellent use of innovative technologies like ShotSpotter and computer-aided dispatch. Surveillance is also ramping up, with 417 registered cameras and a plan to roll out over 130 new camera locations this year! That’s a great move towards making us all feel safer in our neighborhoods.
As we look ahead, SPD has plans for a new real-time crime center, integrating 250 camera systems, which will help in swiftly addressing any issues that arise.
