Savannah’s ARTS Southeast Marks 10 Years of Community and Creativity with Anniversary Celebration

Savannah Celebrates a Decade of Creativity with ARTS Southeast

In the heart of Savannah, Georgia, a remarkable journey of creativity and community spirit has unfolded over the past ten years. This Friday, November 1st, residents are invited to celebrate 10 years of ARTS Southeast, a vibrant arts organization that has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of the local artistic landscape.

A Humble Beginning

Flashback to a decade ago, when three hopeful artists walked into an unassuming, two-story brick building at the corner of Bull and 39th streets. They were determined to create something special, even if it meant signing a six-month lease on a space that was far from glamorous. Little did they know, this decision would ignite a creative spark that would transform both their lives and the neighborhood!

“If it had lasted six months and been really cool, I would have thought that was fun,” reminisced co-founder Jennifer Moss. Her enthusiasm is palpable, as she reflects on how they initially approached their project with excitement and curiosity. Co-founder and Facilities Manager Alexis Javier echoed this sentiment, saying, “We thought, let’s make it as awesome and as fun as we can and just see what happens.” And what happened, indeed!

From Sulfur Studios to Community Hub

They named their new space Sulfur Studios, and soon enough, it morphed into a thriving hub for artists of all kinds. In an area that once featured only a few local businesses—a barber shop, a bakery, and some dive bars—this fledgling art space began attracting more talent and attention.

“The energy here is very contagious,” noted Gallery Assistant Samantha Mack. “Being in a space with so many artists doing cool things just keeps lending itself to more cool things happening. I feel very lucky to be here.” The transformation of the surrounding neighborhood has been equally impressive, evolving from a ‘fringe’ area to a vibrant district filled with creative energy.

Weathering Challenges

Of course, the journey has not been without its challenges. The pandemic presented a considerable hurdle for many within the arts community, including ARTS Southeast. As Executive Director Emily Earl pointed out, “There were so many times I wondered why we were doing this because it’s hard and I’m tired.” Yet, the organization emerged stronger, officially becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2021 and positioning itself for a bright future.

Program Director Jon Witzky emphasized that the dedication of the team isn’t for profits, but for passion. “None of us are getting rich off this. This is just what we do and we understand this is something that’s needed and we have a love for it,” he shared.

A Community of Support

Throughout the years, ARTS Southeast has expanded its programming significantly. From affordable studio spaces for emerging artists to curated exhibitions, they’ve focused continually on supporting creative individuals. They even host First Friday Sulfur Street Fairs, enlivening the community with local art, food, and culture.

However, none of this would have been possible without the support from the local community. This Friday’s fourth annual fundraiser, Art on Bull, offers a perfect opportunity for folks to show their appreciation. Festivities include a block party with live music, DJs, food trucks, and even live painting by local artists. What better way to celebrate ten years of artistic progress?

A Bright Future Ahead

As the organization reflects on its success, the founding artists remain grounded in their mission: to serve and uplift the artist community. “Because we’re all artists, we have an insider view on how things should be done,” said Moss. With plans to further enhance their support initiatives, ARTS Southeast looks forward to continuing its dynamic role in the Savannah arts scene.

When asked how they feel about the future, Witzky replied, “Making and dedicating yourself to art and culture is a very radical thing to do.” With community and creativity at the forefront, the upcoming anniversary celebration will not just mark a decade of achievements, but also the exciting possibilities for the next ten years in Savannah.
