Savannah, the charming coastal gem of Georgia, is once again aglow with the magic of the holiday season, thanks to the Downtown Neighborhood Association’s exciting Holiday Tour of Homes. Each year, locals and tourists alike eagerly anticipate this festive event, and as ticket sales go live, the buzz around town grows louder. After all, who wouldn’t want to peek inside the historic homes dressed up for the holidays?
Among the stunning residences showcased in the 2023 edition was the illustrious Cooper House, a magnificent 4,200-square-foot Victorian masterpiece that first opened its doors in 1884. Originally built for W.G. Cooper, a well-known grocery and liquor store owner on Broughton Street, this home carries a legacy as rich as its architectural beauty. Current owners, Raymond and Lisa Hughes, graciously welcomed guests this December, all while decked out in cheerful and jolly décor.
The Hugheses stumbled upon Savannah’s charm while their daughter was studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). They were drawn to the Cooper House once they learned that it was available from the former owner and neighbor. Lisa recalls, “We always admired the home’s exterior, but stepping inside took our breath away. It had original bones and was in great condition for its age.” With its spacious side porches, carriage house, and double lot, they couldn’t resist making it their forever home.
They commenced their historic restoration journey, which unfolded over two years. Like any renovation, they quickly learned that it is a work in progress. The home was already a treasure trove, featuring exquisite plaster crown moldings, heart of pine floors, and even nine fireplaces gracefully positioned throughout. As the fourth owners of this historic haven, they were determined to leave their own mark.
The Hugheses transformed heavy furnishings and dark interiors into an inviting blend of contemporary and antique styles. They turned to interior design experts, Gaston Crue, for guidance on furniture and artwork selections, crafting a delightful ambience. Lisa proudly shares, “We changed out every lighting fixture in the house.” The couple also restored the nine fireplaces, upgraded the heating and cooling system, and even repaired the exterior wood and gardens, all while maintaining that charming Savannah Gray brick hardscape.
As guests entered, one room stood out – the Bourbon Room. Shelves filled with rare and familiar bourbon varieties captured everyone’s attention. “My husband loves showing it off and enjoys relaxing and entertaining in there,” Lisa beamed. With a cozy, club-like feel, this room is where Raymond can unwind and enjoy his collection.
In other areas, brilliant stained glass transom windows inspired color palettes that made every room feel festive. The family room showcased a beautiful peacock painting, while the entry hall greeted visitors with a stunning mahogany staircase adorned in holiday greenery. And don’t forget the traditional Christmas touches throughout, from tartan stockings hung above a festive fireplace to a Victorian-style Christmas tree – the Hughes home truly reflected the spirit of the season.
The dining area was elegantly set with family china, complete with antique punch bowls that Lisa adores. Tucked between the magnolia and holly garlands were tangerines and velvet ribbons, showcasing a personal touch from their very own garden. In the kitchen, equipped for holiday baking, professional-grade appliances and open space invited family gatherings and joyful cooking sessions.
One cannot help but feel the festive warmth that fills the Hugh’s residence, as they expressed how much they adored participating in the Holiday Tour of Homes. “Using my mother’s Christmas plates always rings in the holiday,” Lisa shared with a smile.
No holiday tour would be complete without a big round of applause for this historic home, rooted in community and love. The Hugheses felt honored to be part of the tour, bringing seasonal cheer and a splash of history to all who visited. Indeed, Savannah shines the brightest during this festive season, thanks to cherished homes like the Cooper House.
