SAVANNAH, GA. – The expansion project at the Savannah Convention Center is behind schedule, as revealed in a recent news release from the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC). Originally expected to be complete by May 2024, unforeseen delays in construction have pushed this date back.
The expansion project at the Savannah Convention Center, valued at $276 million, broke ground in March 2021. The ambitious undertaking aims to double the existing exhibition space to 200,000 square feet, add an appealing 40,000 square feet of ballroom space, introduce 15 new meeting rooms, and create a parking garage suitable for 900 vehicles. The state of Georgia is funding the project.
No new projected completion date has been provided yet. The GSFIC, though, has attributed the postponement to “unforeseen construction delays.” More concrete details concerning the extent of these delays or how long the project may now take, however, have yet to be released.
Savannah Convention Center stands out as one of the city’s leading venues for events, conferences, and conventions. Its planned expansion is anticipated to amplify this standing further, opening up extra space for larger events, attracting more visitors to the city, and facilitating economic development.
Therefore, delays in the expansion project’s completion may have corresponding delays in the realization of these benefits. Nonetheless, Savannah continues its pressing efforts to enhance its assuredly positive impact on the city’s economy and lifestyle.
