Big things are happening in Savannah! The Savannah Convention Center’s much-anticipated expansion, which comes with a price tag of $276 million, is set to be completed just in time for its first big event in 2025! This thrilling news was shared at the center’s annual holiday luncheon by none other than Mark V. Smith, the chairman of the Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority board.
So, when can we expect to see all this shiny new space in action? Well, get ready for February 13-15, 2025, when the Nike Savannah Showdown volleyball tournament will be taking over the newly expanded convention center! Smith confidently stated, “I don’t think there’s any question that we will definitely hold the volleyball tournament.” Now that’s a commitment that will surely get locals excited!
Of course, this fabulous expansion hasn’t come without its hiccups. Earlier this year, delays pushed back the expected May opening, resulting in one lost event and many other gatherings needing to find new spots around Savannah. Talk about a tough break! But it looks like those challenges are finally being put behind us as the construction team works diligently to wrap things up.
When complete, this expansion is set to double the exhibit hall space and introduce a magnificent new ballroom! A sneak peek at a video shown during the luncheon showcased the expansive halls and eye-catching lobbies, adorned with beautiful art from Savannah artists. “You don’t get this anywhere else in the country,” remarked SCC General Manager Kelvin Moore, who certainly knows a thing or two about convention centers from his time at Chicago’s McCormick Place. “I’m proud to be here. You guys should be proud to have this in your community.” Words to live by!
Excitingly, the center has recently received a temporary occupancy permit, which means it’s passed necessary life safety tests. However, before the grand opening, there are still a few things that need fixing—like an escalator and an elevator needing completion. But hey, that’s what the final touches are all about!
While everyone eagerly awaits that volleyball tournament, there’s also a hope to have the ballroom ready for the Savannah Economic Development Authority’s annual breakfast meeting, scheduled for January 14. The status of this event is still uncertain, but center leaders are doing all they can to make it happen! SEDA President and CEO Trip Tollison, who is also on the board, praised their efforts, saying, “They’ve been very accommodating and really trying to work as hard as they can to make that happen. We’re just very appreciative of it.”
With a bright future ahead, the expanded Savannah Convention Center promises to be a hub of activity, excitement, and community pride. As locals look forward to the upcoming events, one thing’s for sure—Savannah is gearing up to take the events scene by storm!
