Savannah Unites in Song to Celebrate Community Spirit and Local Beauty

Savannah Celebrates Community Spirit with a New Song

In the heart of Savannah, a poignant blend of music and community spirit came to life recently when local resident Lembeck took center stage to celebrate the beauty of his beloved city. This isn’t your typical concert experience; it’s a unique collaboration between community members and the local symphony that has brought smiles and cheer to those lucky enough to be part of it.

A Special Tribute to Savannah’s Beauty

Every week, Lembeck, a member of the Savannah Philharmonic chorus, writes catchy little ditty for the Kiwanis members to kick off their morning meetings. It’s a delightful way to bring everyone together and start the day on a cheerful note. During a recent meeting, Savannah Philharmonic Artistic Director Keitaro Harada made a guest appearance, and Lembeck was inspired to present an original song in honor of Harada’s presence. “The Kiwanis members really got into it,” Lembeck shared, recalling the fun atmosphere. “It was a moment where I felt like I could really shine.”

From Meetings to Main Events

With the annual outdoor concert approaching, Harada approached Lembeck with a special request. He asked Lembeck to create lyrics that would fit the theme “Savannah the Beautiful” using the familiar melody of “America the Beautiful.” This request wasn’t daunting for Lembeck, who has written songs celebrating Savannah for years. “It was pretty easy to tailor lyrics to fit the Phil the Park event – especially when I already had the tune,” he remarked.

A Lifelong Passion for Writing

Lembeck’s artistic journey began during his childhood summers at camp, where he found a love for writing lyrics. Through high school and into adulthood, he continued crafting words for various celebrations and gatherings. The key, as Lembeck mentioned, is to keep the words simple and singable. “It comes to me naturally,” he said, delighted by the opportunity to share his lyrics with a large audience. “The fact that 20,000 people could sing a song that I wrote is really a hoot and a half!”

A Moment to Remember

On the day of the concert, attendees were invited to join in singing the new lyrics for “Savannah the Beautiful,” accompanied by the talented Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra. The energy was palpable as voices rose together to pay homage to the city they cherish. Each chorus echoed the pride and warmth every Savannahan feels about their home.

A Glimpse into History

The original “America the Beautiful” can be traced back to a poem written by Katharine Lee Bates, a professor at Wellesley College, who penned it in 1895 after being inspired by the magnificent views at Pike’s Peak. The words have since become a cherished part of American culture, known for their heartfelt celebration of the nation’s landscapes. Lembeck’s adaptation maintains that spirit of joy while specifically highlighting the stunning scenery and charm of Savannah.

Celebrating Together

The Phil the Park event not only showcased musical talent but also underscored the importance of community connection. It was a reminder of how the arts can unite people, and how local traditions foster a sense of belonging. Savannah’s streets were alive with the sounds of voices merging in harmony, reflecting the city’s diverse and loving community.

As the evening winds down, one thing is clear: the spirit of Savannah shines brightly through its people, their talents, and their shared love for the beautiful city they call home.
