When you think of Savannah, your mind might instantly drift to the mesmerizing charm of its cobblestone streets and exquisite cuisine. However, within this vibrant city lies a coffee scene that truly deserves a spotlight of its own. While the culinary world has gotten ample attention in recent years, the rich history of local coffee roasters often goes unnoticed. One coffee roaster that has been steadily building its reputation since 2009 is Cup to Cup Coffee Roasters.
James Spano, the face behind Cup to Cup Coffee Roasters, has been dedicated to crafting exceptional coffee for over 15 years now. Reflecting on his beginnings, he mentioned, “When I first came in 2009, there were the classic staples like Gallery Espresso and Sentient Bean – the main players at that time. Beyond that, especially downtown, things were pretty quiet.” This realization encouraged him to seize the opportunity and establish his own roastery here in the beautiful Lowcountry.
So, what sets Cup to Cup apart from the other coffee shops? For James, it’s more than just brewing coffee – it’s about fostering connections. He explains, “I feel called to bring people together. My first job at Tumors Coffee in Auburn, Alabama, opened my eyes to how small interactions could change someone’s day. It became my mission to incorporate that kindness into the community here.”
After eight years without a cafe, James finally sees a light at the end of the tunnel. While navigating the challenges of the pandemic, which stalled business for a while, he’s excited to share that things have taken an upswing recently. “Since the beginning of this year, we’ve seen a 20% increase in sales compared to last year. It’s refreshing!” he adds with enthusiasm.
Unlike many local businesses that see tourist traffic, Cup to Cup has developed a loyal local following. James notes, “We have lots of regulars who seek us out. Some of them came to love us when we were off the beaten path. People living in the area felt comfortable parking nearby and escaping the tourist hustle.” It’s evident that his commitment to quality and community engagement has left a lasting impression.
You’d think someone who roasts coffee daily would live on the stuff. “I start my morning with about half a cup at home,” James reveals. “It’s how I get moving.” Throughout his day, he samples various roasts and brews, sipping little bits to find that perfect blend. When asked if he has a cut-off time for coffee consumption, he chuckles, “Not really! Though, when I overdo it, my mind gets a bit scattered. It’s less about staying awake and more about maintaining balance.”
As the seasons change, so do the offerings at Cup to Cup. One of James’s favorites during the winter months is their house-made drinking chocolate. “It’s that perfect cozy drink mixed with half and half – an absolute treat topped with whipped cream!” He enthusiastically shared that they typically bring this delightful drink back right after Thanksgiving, ensuring their customers get a warm hug in a mug.
James is passionate about supporting other local businesses too. “We’ve been fortunate enough to supply coffee to several wonderful restaurants like Paris Market and Alexander’s Bistro. It feels rewarding to see others thrive while we contribute our beans.”
As Savannah’s coffee scene continues to evolve, James remains hopeful and excited for the future. “I love seeing smaller businesses succeed and put their passions on the map. The more diverse options we have, the better! Plus, I’m excited to see what the Waters Avenue corridor brings next.”
Curious about tasting the magic yourself? Stop by Cup to Cup, which is open six days a week, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, you’ll quickly understand why this cozy spot has carved out a name for itself in Savannah’s bustling coffee scene.
