Savannah Selected for Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities Initiative

City of Savannah Bolsters Sustainable Development Through Bloomberg Philanthropies Collaboration

In an exciting announcement, the City of Savannah has been chosen by Bloomberg Philanthropies to become part of the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative. This select group comprises 25 U.S. cities demonstrating an ambitious approach towards carbon reduction, climate resilience, and viable economic development.

“Savannah is at the forefront of efforts to curtail emissions and foster equitable growth,” stated Mayor Van R. Johnson, II. “Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support for our shared vision is truly appreciated.”

Fighting Climate Change, Promoting Equity Through Innovation

The Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative is a three-year project. It seeks to amplify federal funding to support innovative, localized solutions leading to resilient, low-carbon, and economically prosperous communities. The initiative builds on the longstanding efforts by American cities to mitigate the intertwined challenges of climate change and racial wealth disparity.

The $200 million project will provide substantial support to the selected cities enabling them to implement transformative strategies within their building and transportation sectors. This will be achieved through partnerships with PolicyLink, Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, and Natural Resources Defense Council.

Bolstering Savannah’s Sustainable Initiatives

“We are unwavering in our commitment towards a future where safe, renewable energy spurs economic opportunities for our citizens,”, said City Manager Joseph A. Melder. “Our selection to participate in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative reinforces our capability to accomplish the goals we’ve set.”

As a participant, Savannah will be granted a Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded Innovation Team (i-team), consisting of up to three dedicated professionals. The team will possess expertise in data analysis, insight development, human-focused design, systems thinking, and project management. This will augment the city’s capacity in advancing climate mitigation and fostering fair outcomes.

In addition, the city will receive multi-year, bespoke policy, and technical support. In partnership with community-based organizations, this will enable the leveraging of public, private, and philanthropic investments.

Savannah’s Ambition Recognized

Savannah was selected for the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative in acknowledgment of its leadership and aspiration to build resilient, equitable communities. Potential solutions implemented through the initiative could encompass the development of affordable, energy-efficient housing, investment in the infrastructure of electric vehicles, fast-tracking the transition to clean energy, and more.
