With notable experience in various television shows, his role as Dennis Dunphy highlights the fun and camaraderie of working within the Marvel universe. Aspiring actors are encouraged to follow their passion locally, as seen in McCullough’s inspiring story.
It’s not every day you hear about someone from the charming streets of Savannah, Georgia, making waves in a Marvel film. But that’s exactly what’s happening with William Mark McCullough, a native who has turned his childhood dreams into a stunning reality by snagging a role in the upcoming movie, Captain America: Brave New World.
William grew up in a hard-working, blue-collar family. Like many kids, he found himself captivated by movies and Marvel Comics, dreaming of heroes in action. However, the thought of becoming an actor wasn’t on his radar until later in life. While studying political philosophy in college, he took a leap of faith and chose acting as an elective over art history. This small decision led to a life-changing experience.
His first taste of acting came when he performed a monologue from Doctor Faustus. This was a turning point for him, described as a magical experience that ignited a strong desire to pursue acting as a serious career. Yet, like many aspiring actors, William’s journey was not without its detours. He found himself in law school and even dealt with an unsatisfactory job that didn’t fulfill his creative spirit.
Eventually, through mentorship and support in Savannah, he decided to fully immerse himself in the world of acting. When it came time to audition for his role in Captain America: Brave New World, he approached it just like any other audition, blissfully unaware that he was stepping into the Marvel universe.
William was cast as Dennis Dunphy, a member of a U.S. Navy SEAL team and an old friend of Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie. Dunphy might not have superhuman powers, but his comic book alter ego is Demolition Man, also known as D-Man, which serves as a fun nod for die-hard comic fans.
Initially expected to work for just one day, William’s compelling authenticity in the role led to a more significant presence in the film than planned. Hours on set were filled with enthusiasm, laughter, and a strong sense of camaraderie amongst the cast, especially with Mackie, making it feel like a tight-knit family.
William is no stranger to the camera, having honed his skills in various TV shows and films, such as Apple TV’s “Manhunt”, Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias”, and even working alongside stars like Tom Cruise and Nicolas Cage. His roles often allow him to channel his intense, physical energy, which he embraces wholeheartedly.
As for the upcoming Captain America movie, William hopes audiences will see it as a “two-hour fun ride” without any heavy themes. It’s an adventure that promises entertainment and thrill, something everyone can enjoy!
For those budding actors in Savannah dreaming of their big break, William encourages them to pursue their passion locally instead of feeling pressured to head to bigger cities. With ten years of experience under his belt, he emphasizes the importance of treating an acting career like a business and seeking guidance from successful actors. He even made a vision board in 2019 that featured the Marvel Cinematic Universe, demonstrating the power of visualization and ambition.
With William Mark McCullough’s star on the rise, it’s thrilling to watch a local talent soar to great heights. His story reminds us that with determination, mentorship, and a sprinkle of magic, dreams really can become reality. Who knows? Maybe the next Marvel character might be inspired by another aspiring actor from Savannah.
