On a sunny Thursday afternoon in Savannah, a lively crowd of about 80 enthusiastic supporters gathered at the Kamala Harris for President campaign office in Garden City. Led by State Rep. Edna Jackson, the crowd joined in spirited renditions of patriotic songs like “God Bless America” and a catchy tune that echoed, “give me that old voting soul.” The air was thick with energy as volunteers eagerly awaited the arrival of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Earlier in the day, Doug Emhoff delivered a rousing get-out-the-vote speech at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, where he emphasized the crucial role that local communities play in the electoral process. “The entire election could literally run right through your own community,” he remarked, addressing the audience. With a cheerful tone, Emhoff encouraged attendees by declaring that the people of Savannah could significantly influence the outcome of the election, potentially paving the way for a Kamala Harris presidency.
During his speech, Emhoff took the opportunity to outline Harris’s vision for an “opportunity economy,” a concept vital to her campaign. He did not hold back in his critiques of the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, making his points resonate with the eager audience, who cheered in appreciation at various points. At one heartwarming moment, when he assured that Harris would “be here with Georgia every step of the way” in response to recent hurricane devastation, a supporter enthusiastically shouted back, “And we will be here for Kamala!”
The atmosphere was electric as this event coincided with a flurry of campaign activities across the state, marking the beginning of early voting on Oct. 15. Just a few days before, former President Bill Clinton visited west and middle Georgia, including Albany and the Georgia National Fair in Perry. Meanwhile, other notable surrogates like Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also made appearances to bolster support for the Harris campaign. As a significant highlight, Kamala Harris is set to make her fifth visit to Georgia this Saturday, attended by crowds hungry for change.
Savannah Mayor Van Johnson spoke at the cultural event, sharing his insights that “the road to the White House runs through Georgia, and the lane to that road runs through Savannah and Coastal Georgia.” Several local Democratic figures, including State Sen. Derrick Mallow and District 6 Chatham County Commissioner Aaron “ADot” Whitely, also lent their voices to the preparations for what they hope will be a successful campaign.
To add a splash of local charm to the day, Emhoff and Maya Harris indulged in a delightful lunch at Savannah’s beloved Mrs. Wilkes. Emhoff went table to table, chatting with diners and taking pictures, showcasing his down-to-earth charisma that resonated well with the local community. Later, at Savannah State University, he surprised students, earning cheers as he was introduced. Here, Maya Harris made a point to celebrate her sister’s ties to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), emphasizing the $17 billion support the Biden Administration has devoted to these institutions.
Towards the close of the event-filled day, Emhoff acknowledged a crowd member who identified as a “Republicans for Harris” supporter, underlining the campaign’s goal of inclusivity. “(Harris) is building a massively big tent that includes Bernie Sanders to Liz Cheney,” he remarked, reinforcing that there is space for everyone in this campaign. This sentiment of reaching out to moderates and independents struck a chord with many attendees, embodying a vision for a united community moving toward progress.
The day was filled with excitement, laughter, and heartfelt connections, all wrapped up in the determination to make a difference during this pivotal election year. As the campaign moves forward, the enthusiasm in Savannah and beyond continues to grow, setting the stage for an engaging race ahead.
