The Fourth of July usually sees families and friends flocking to the beaches in South Carolina’s Lowcountry area, but this year’s celebrations come with a warning. A moderate risk of rip currents is forecasted for the entirety of Independence Day, affecting popular coastal locations such as Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Hilton Head and Tybee Beach. The South Carolina National Weather Service (SC NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution during the celebrations.
A rip current, often simply known as a ‘rip’, is a powerful, narrow channel of fast-moving water that moves directly away from the shoreline, cutting through the lines of breaking waves. These strong, localized currents can sweep even the strongest swimmers out to sea. The likelihood of rip currents is particularly high during periods of heavy surf conditions, such as those expected for the Fourth of July.
The SC NWS has advised those trapped in a rip current to remember three crucial steps. Firstly, swim parallel to the shoreline, rather than directly towards it, to counter the pull of the current. Once you feel the current weakening, start swimming at an angle away from the current and towards the shore. If lifeguards are present and you find yourself caught in a rip, signal them to your position and tread water until they can provide assistance.
The SC NWS and NOAA are also urging beachgoers to follow important safety guidelines. This includes never swimming alone, always keeping a close eye on children and those who are not strong swimmers, and always swimming at a beach with lifeguards on duty. When in doubt, beachgoers are advised to refrain from entering the water.
The risks posed by the rip currents may cause disruptions to events scheduled for the Independence Day celebrations. Festival-goers at Isle of Palms should prepare for potential alterations to planned events, including the traditional parade and fireworks display.
Keeping current with accurate and up-to-date forecasts from reputable sources can ensure a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July celebration. As the situation unfolds, HERE News Network will continue to provide timely updates on the rip current warning and its potential effects on local holiday festivities.
