Born in the bustling neighborhood of Queens, NY, Mary’s early years were spent in the charming town of Marietta, GA. An early bloomer, her inquisitive nature was evident from a young age; she was reading soup cans by the time she was just three years old! A bright learner, Mary skipped a grade in elementary school, exhibiting the kind of intelligence and curiosity that would shape her life.
After completing high school, Mary took her academic journey to the next level, graduating from the University of Georgia. This chapter of her life led her to a career at Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta, GA, where she forged lifelong connections. It was there that she met her husband, Mark, and the two celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary just a few months prior to her passing in September 2024.
Mary’s creative journey took a pivotal turn in 1997 when, after undergoing brain surgery for a benign tumor, she began painting. With no formal training, she became a self-taught folk artist, showcasing and selling her work at over 100 art shows and festivals around the Atlanta area. Her colorful creations resonated with many and brought joy to those who were fortunate enough to experience them.
Beyond her canvas, Mary was dedicated to sharing her love for art with the next generation. She volunteered at local schools, striving to inspire young minds about the wonders of color and creativity. Her efforts made a lasting impact on countless children, instilling a sense of appreciation for the arts.
Mary wasn’t just an artist; she was also a devoted dog mom to Ella, their beloved Dalmatian. Often seen taking walks in local parks or along the beaches, she cherished these moments with her furry companion. Mary and Mark loved exploring various destinations, including Mount Pleasant, Hilton Head Island, and Hunting Island State Park, making lasting memories along the way.
With a passion for flipping houses, Mary showcased her talent for renovation through her recent ventures. She purchased, redesigned, and sold homes, transforming them into beautiful spaces. Her interests extended beyond the visual arts to poetry, photography, music, and the culinary world; she was known as a fantastic chef and baker, always ready to whip up delicious treats for family and friends.
Mary leaves behind not only her loving husband Mark but also her siblings: Alyssa Waddell (Dallas, GA), Eileen Brenneman (St Charles, MO), and Michael Tilley (St Simons, GA). In addition, she enjoyed being an aunt to three nephews and a niece, who will always remember their fun adventures with her.
While her parents, Joan and Albert Tilley of Marietta, GA, have preceded her in death, Mary’s legacy will continue through the many lives she touched. Although there are no current plans for services, Mark is hopeful about organizing an art show in her memory. This would surely be a wonderful way to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Mary may consider making donations to the Leukemia Society or the American Heart Association.
