In Savannah, Georgia, a routine fighter jet exercise turned into an unexpected incident. The exercise, known as Sentry Savannah, is conducted by The Air National Guard at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport and saw the airport briefly close on Monday.
An F-22 Raptor found itself stuck on the tarmac at about 11:30 on Monday morning. This caused the closure of the airport for about 30 minutes as flights were consequently rerouted to another runway. The runway remained closed until it was safe again at approximately 3 p.m.
No injuries have been reported from the pilot involved in the incident. The Air National Guard has yet to release any information about what may have caused the mishap with the F-22 Raptor. In a statement released about the incident, the Guard reassured the public by stating, “Sentry Savannah is all about showcasing readiness and this mishap affirmed our Airmen’s ability to respond at a moment’s notice.”
The incident comes during The Sentry Savannah exercises, which are expected to cause an increase in jet traffic noise in and around Savannah until Saturday, May 18. The air dominance center has encouraged those in the area to get ready for the additional noise and to watch out for the jets in action.
Sentry Savannah is a unique training opportunity for our air guards and their allies. The exercise allows aircrew to experience representative threats in a contested environment, enabling them to hone their skills in a unique setting. The aircraft participating include not only the F-22 Raptor but also other models. This year’s exercise is expected to continue despite the incident on Monday.
The F-22 Raptor mishap during the Sentry Savannah exercises prompts airport closure and rerouting of flights. No injuries have been reported from the pilot involved. The Air National Guard is currently investigating the incident.
