During these hours, the bridge would only open for emergencies, aiming to smoothen traffic flow and eliminate the congestion that drivers often face.

Laura Hamm, who works nearby, shared her excitement about the potential changes, noting, “When the temporary restrictions went into place in March, I noticed better flow in traffic getting to and from work. The plan would save me time and make my commute more predictable.”

Concerns from Boaters

But not everyone is in agreement. Boaters using the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway are raising their voices against the proposed plan. For those navigating the waters on sailboats or smaller vessels, the restrictions are seen as a significant obstacle. Geri Connors expressed her frustration in feedback, highlighting the need for balance, “Give residents here a break. Specify limited times boaters can come through. Not every hour!”

On the flip side, Cass Roby expressed concerns that this change could deter sailboat traffic altogether, saying, “Sailboats will be skipping this area. It’s a serious mistake if this plan goes through.” The Marina Trawler Owners Association suggests that the proposed schedule could significantly impact the safety and efficiency of boating traffic, fearing it might lead to an increase in vessels operating during darker hours due to longer wait times.

The Coast Guard’s proposal intends to strike a balance between the needs of motorists and those of boaters, acknowledging the significant amount of both land and water traffic. In 2022, the bridge was opened for marine traffic 1,669 times, primarily during the busy fall and spring seasons when travelers frequent the East Coast.
