A startling incident in a Port Royal neighborhood unfolded when a resident named Joe Ciccone found a man attempting to steal his truck one February evening. The unexpected intruder was carrying a sword and wearing attire comparable to that of a stereotypical ninja. In an act of self-defense, Ciccone, a firefighter and emergency medical technician by profession, engaged the man, disarmed him, and held him until police arrived.

The encounter sparked outrage and concern among Port Royal residents, particularly when it was discovered the perpetrator lived at the nearby MercyMe Sober Living house—a residence for up to ten recovering addicts. The current residents of this house are undergoing rehabilitation from alcohol and drug addictions.

The Sober House Dilemma

The apparently intoxicated man who attempted to steal Ciccone’s vehicle had a criminal record linked to alcohol, likely procured from hand sanitizer, as indicated in the police report. This unfortunate incident put the sober house on the community’s radar, and residents are now demanding stricter regulations and better oversight.
