News Summary

After nearly three decades of shaking up refreshing cocktails, Pool Bar Jim, a beloved figure in Hilton Head, retires due to health challenges. Having formed a vibrant beachside community at Pool Bar Jim’s, his departure marks the end of an era filled with joy and creativity. His legacy, celebrated through a comprehensive recipe book, continues to resonate with locals and tourists alike as they remember the unforgettable experiences shared at the bar.

Hilton Head Island Says Goodbye to Local Legend

After almost three decades of serving delicious frozen drinks, James “Pool Bar Jim” Lisenby has officially hung up his cocktail shaker for good. The beloved bartender, known for his vibrant personality and signature beverages, is stepping away from the bar scene due to some serious health challenges that have come up recently.

Health Concerns Lead to Retirement

In August 2023, Lisenby received some tough news: he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and Parkinson’s disease. These health issues have forced him to retire, despite the fact that he is clearly not ready to leave the business he worked so hard to build. Having founded Pool Bar Jim’s back in 1993, Lisenby has been a fixture in the community and has served up countless drinks to locals and tourists alike. Even though reaching retirement age might suggest it’s time to take a break, Lisenby has always viewed bartending not just as a job, but a passion.

The Genesis of Pool Bar Jim’s

It all started with a simple yet innovative idea. When Lisenby proposed the concept of a poolside bar to the management at Marriott Grande Ocean Resort, he was met with enthusiasm. In those days, hotels primarily offered minibars or cocktails in the lobby, making Jim’s vision of a fun and lively poolside bar feel revolutionary. That idea quickly turned into a beloved local hotspot.

A Tropical Haven for Cocktails

Pool Bar Jim’s has become synonymous with refreshing cocktails, attracting tens of thousands of thirsty customers each year. One of the defining features of the bar is the commitment to using fresh ingredients. Guests love watching their cocktails being crafted right in front of them, giving a personal touch to the bar experience. With an impressive menu that includes everything from pina coladas to daiquiris and even unique original drinks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Keeping The Spirit Alive Through Recipes

In an effort to cherish and document the magic he created, Lisenby compiled many of his original drink recipes into a comprehensive 300-page book titled “Pool Bar Jim’s Tropical and Exotic Drinks.” Published in 2005, the book is not only packed with drink recipes but also serves as a delightful history lesson about the beachside cocktail culture that Jim has championed over the years. It’s a heartfelt tribute dedicated to his loyal customers and his son, Daniel.

A New Chapter Away from the Bar

In 2016, Pool Bar Jim’s made a big move to the Sea Crest Resort, keeping the tradition alive while adding new fans to the mix. Although the bar is thriving, the bittersweet news of Lisenby’s retirement leaves a poignant mark on the community. Lisenby has continued to manage his health by regularly visiting a cardiologist and considering treatments for his Parkinson’s disease.

Looking Ahead with Hope

With his health concerns lingering in the background, Lisenby is determined to make the most of his time. He suspects he has about five years left and expresses a desire to travel. One enticing destination on his bucket list is the renowned Soggy Dollar Bar in the British Virgin Islands, which he has always admired. Despite stepping away from the bar, he still finds joy in visiting Pool Bar Jim’s, where he can reconnect with friends and cherished patrons.

A Fond Farewell

As Lisenby closes this chapter of his life, his influence on Hilton Head Island will not soon be forgotten. The cherished moments of laughter, refreshing drinks, and friendly conversations will surely live on in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of enjoying his company. While he may be retiring, his legacy at Pool Bar Jim’s will continue to inspire many for years to come.
