Historic Groundbreaking at New Hilton Head Island High School
The first step in the development of Hilton Head Island’s brand-new high school was taken on Wednesday, as construction crews and Beaufort County School District officials broke ground at the site. This marks the beginning of a landmark project introduced as part of a bond referendum that saw overwhelming support from local voters.
A New Chapter for Hilton Head
The original Hilton Head Island High School, which has stood since 1983, is set for a significant makeover. Included in the plans is the replacement of a majority of classrooms with a contemporary three-story teaching wing, alongside a wealth of further enhancements designed to breathe new life into this established educational hub.
More than Just a Makeover
The project represents more than just an aesthetic update. The goal is to create a space that provides a range of additional opportunities for students to expand their skills and knowledge. Speaking at the groundbreaking, the high school principal, Steve Schidrich explained the importance of the renovation:
“This building was built in 1983. To be able to have more classroom space, to expand our programs, we can provide more opportunities for students to learn about different skills. And I think things they can use to support let’s say the local economy or even the global economy,” said Schidrich.
With the potential for local students to engage with an increasingly globalized world, the new Hilton Head Island High School promises to change the game when it comes to the area’s approach to education.

The project is projected to continue for four and a half years, with students, staff, and community members eagerly awaiting the transformation of this well-loved institution.
