If you’re in Savannah this January, get ready for an inspiring and exciting adventure at the 14th Annual Mountainfilm on Tour! This two-day festival kicks off on January 24 and runs until January 25 at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, located at 201 Montgomery St. You won’t want to miss it!

Bringing the Festival Home

It all started back in 2010 when a passionate local, Zelda Tannenbaum, dared to dream of showcasing powerful documentaries in her hometown. After attending the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colorado, she was inspired to bring that same experience to Savannah. Since those early days, the festival has blossomed from a simple one-night gathering to a vibrant two-day extravaganza featuring over eight feature-length and short-form documentaries.

A Focus on Inspiration and Education

The mountain film festival isn’t just about entertainment. It aims to inspire viewers about social and environmental change. In fact, over the years, the festival has partnered with local schools, reaching out to more than 11,000 students in the Savannah-Chatham area, allowing them to experience selected films right in their classrooms. With themes focusing on uplifting stories, the festival has truly been a beacon of education and awareness in the community.

Kicking Off with a Heartwarming Feature

This year’s festival kicks off on January 24 at 7 p.m. with “Between the Mountain and the Sky,” a gripping 92-minute documentary that tells the story of Maggie Doyne, who co-founded the Kopila Valley Children’s Home in Nepal. Her work with orphans and efforts to provide tuition-free education for over 400 students has been recognized worldwide. The film captured the Audience Award at the 2024 Mountainfilm Tour in Telluride, and it’s sure to be a hit here in Savannah too!

To add to the excitement, there will also be a beautifully shot 7-minute short film about traditional monks performing the Cham dance at the Indian Thiksey Monastery. Talk about a cultural feast!

Family-Friendly Fun and Thought-Provoking Evenings

On January 25, the festivities continue with a series of family-friendly short films at 2 p.m. Grab the kids and dive into fun documentaries like “Judy’s Creek: Discovering the Life of the Streambed,”, “The Rock Pool Waltz,” and “Desert Wings.” With titles that spark curiosity, everyone will find something delightful to enjoy!

The evening continues at 7 p.m. with an array of eye-opening short films such as “Time is a Funny Thing,” “Mr. Cato,” and even the thought-provoking “The SHIT-THROPOCENE.” After this film, director David Byars will host a Q&A session, discussing the challenges of consumerism and its significant impact on the environment—a topic that is more relevant than ever!
