In a stunning display of voter support, political newcomer Melinda Tunner has emerged victorious in the Ward 6 council election on Hilton Head Island. The results rolled in just after 11 PM on November 5, 2024, revealing that Tunner secured a noteworthy 1,993 votes, translating to an impressive 54.5% of the total cast. This accomplishment placed her ahead of her two opponents, who collectively garnered 44.5% of the vote.
As the last votes were counted, an elated Tunner expressed her eagerness to dive into her new role. “I’m looking forward to working with my fellow council members and I am so thankful for everyone who believed in my vision leading up to the election,” she said, radiating optimism. She emphasized that her priority would be finding common ground and keeping communication lines open with the residents of Ward 6.
For those unfamiliar, Ward 6 represents the vibrant northern island communities, including Palmetto Hall, Mitchelville, Fish Haul, and Hilton Head Plantation. It’s a dynamic region with unique concerns ranging from local landscapes to bustling beach parks.
Tunner’s timing couldn’t be better. She’s stepping into her role just as significant local issues are at the forefront of residents’ minds, including the U.S. 278 Corridor Project and the freshly introduced paid parking plan for beach parks across the island. The electorate is eager to see how she and the council will navigate these challenges.
Bringing a wealth of experience to the council, Tunner has spent over 30 years in finance. Her extensive career also includes public service as a poll manager and clerk for the Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections. With a history of advocating for a local precinct in Palmetto Hall and having served as the treasurer and president of the Palmetto Hall Owners Association Board, she is no stranger to community engagement.
Tunner’s campaign was bolstered by a significant endorsement from Glenn Stanford, the sitting Ward 6 representative on the council, an endorsement that certainly provided a boost during her run. In the final count, her main competitor, Garniewicz, the president and CEO of the Coastal Discovery Museum, received 32.1% of the vote, while Cope, director at the Omni Hotel’s spa on Hilton Head, trailed with 12.1%.
Along with Tunner, Alex Brown, representing Ward 1, and Steve DeSimone, from Ward 3, are also entering the council following the recent election. They will join seasoned council members Patsy Brison, Tamara Becker, and Steve Alfred, creating a blend of fresh perspectives and experienced voices on the council.
As Hilton Head Island embraces this new chapter with Melinda Tunner at the helm for Ward 6, residents can expect a dedicated council member who is determined to listen and address the community’s pressing issues. With her passion and commitment, she’s ready to turn her vision into reality. Cheers to new beginnings!
