BEAUFORT, S.C. – A comprehensive survey has highlighted community impressions on the revitalization of Main Street Beaufort. The results, featuring over 3,000 responses, offer meaningful insights into the preferences and recommendations of local residents and business owners, and paint an optimistic picture of ongoing efforts to re-energize downtown Beaufort.
The survey reveals strong community affection for the downtown area, regarding it as a dynamic and exciting hub. Ashley Brandon, Director of Main Street operations in the city of Beaufort, affirmed this sentiment, “The survey said ‘we love our downtown’ it’s vibrant, it’s fun. There are a few things we can do better, we can always improve.” Survey respondents acknowledged areas for improvement, with lighting enhancements and stronger nighttime security measures among the top recommendations. These insights will help inform Main Street’s mission to attract more people to the downtown area.
James Duffy, President of Downtown Beaufort Merchants Association, discussed the idea of a “social district” with unique lighting features. He said, “We’re talking about the idea of a social district, where we have lighting above the street, that’s like string lighting to create a kind of nighttime sky effect all the time. The extra lighting would make it feel more interesting downtown.”
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the return of Main Street is also marked by the launch of a new website. The site serves as a comprehensive guide to downtown Beaufort, showcasing all the restaurants, services, and merchants on an interactive map. Ashley Brandon, noting how a unified platform is beneficial for businesses and visitors alike, stated, “We decided to do a website that would encompass all of downtown so that you could go to one place and see all the restaurants we have, all the services we have, all the merchants we have all in one place with an interactive map.”
Business owners have expressed appreciation for the user-friendly layout of the new website. The interactive map, in particular, has been praised as a handy tool to navigate the changing scenery downtown. “If you go right now to Google and try to find out what’s happening downtown, you’ll get a million different sites…This map is going to be really helpful,” according to James Duffy.
Overall, the survey results underscore a shared passion for Main Street Beaufort, and suggest a renewed vision for a dynamic, safe, and vibrant downtown experience. This bright future is a testament to the strong correlation between community feedback and civic development. The return of Main Street signifies more than just a physical space; it represents the revitalized spirit of Beaufort – a collaboration between the city and its citizens towards a promising future.
