Beaufort, South Carolina – The annual Lowcountry Children’s Book Fair, a beloved community event, is set to kick off on Saturday, July 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Port Royal Sound Foundation Weezie Educational Pavilion, located at 310 Okatie Hwy, Okatie.
The book fair is presented through a partnership between the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center, the Port Royal Sound Foundation, the Storybook Shoppe children’s bookstore, and the Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization (DAYLO). This all-encompassing event is aiming to promote literacy amongst young people, and provides a fun-filled day for the entire family. The Maritime Center will also be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with no admission fee.
Special guest volunteers from DAYLO will be involved in picture book read-alouds and bookmark art projects throughout the day, adding an interactive element to the event. Numerous authors and artists will also be in attendance to read from their works and participate in signings. Among the featured authors are Susan Diamond Riley, who will read from her newest Delta & Jax Mystery, ‘The Sea Devil’s Demise’ and Antwan Eady, the bestselling children’s picture book author, who will read from his newest book, ‘The Last Stand’.
Besides the author readings, the National Park Service will host a special ‘Read with a Ranger’ program at noon. Participating authors and artists will include Patricia Bee, Rebecca Chamberlain, Mary T. Jacobs, Kellie Langan, Emma McClure, Katherine Robinson, and Laurie Suber. Their books will be available for purchase, and the authors will be available for signing after the readings. At 1:00 p.m., a food truck will start catering, allowing attendees to grab lunch without having to leave the event area.
