In a thrilling matchup last Wednesday, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Crimson Hawks secured a hard-fought win against the Lincoln Lions, edging them out with a score of 61-57. The game showcased impressive performances from several players, particularly University of New Hampshire transfer Christian Moore, who led the charge for IUP with 23 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Playing at home, the Crimson Hawks benefited significantly from their strong teamwork and defensive strategies. Freshman guard Kymani Merraro also contributed positively, scoring 12 points and providing five assists, helping to maintain momentum throughout the contest. The effectiveness of IUP’s defense was highlighted by redshirt junior Damir Brooks, who not only netted 10 points but also dominated the boards with 12 rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
It was not only the starters who made an impact; the bench players also provided crucial support. Mercyhurst transfer Luke Triggs brought in four points and six rebounds, while sophomore Sarp Furtun and freshman Tyler Grove each contributed eight points to IUP’s total score.
Meanwhile, USC Beaufort (USCB) has been making headlines with a commendable 7-1 overall record this season. After a successful six-game winning streak, they faced a defeat at Savannah State but bounced back with a 70-64 victory over Slippery Rock. USCB has shown promise as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against IUP, already achieving two wins against PSAC West rivals.
The Sand Sharks have exhibited offensive firepower, scoring more than 100 points in four of their eight games this season, reflecting their high-scoring capability. They will aim to build on their impressive averages of 92.3 points per game and a solid performance at the defensive end.
On an individual level, senior guard Kenney Gaines leads USCB’s scoring with 105 points this season, showing versatility both as a scorer and playmaker. Junior guard Kevaughn Price is another player to keep an eye on, averaging 12.6 points per game and shooting effectively from the field.
For IUP, Moore continues to be a standout player, leading the team in scoring with 122 points this season and averaging an impressive amount of playing time per game. Also, Tyler Grove and Damir Brooks are making substantial contributions as the season progresses.
Coach Joe Lombardi, now in his 43rd year of coaching, has been instrumental in shaping the IUP men’s basketball program into a force to be reckoned with. Under his leadership, IUP has secured multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and maintained a strong overall winning record, underlining his status as one of the most successful coaches in Division II history.
With both teams performing at high levels, the upcoming matchup promises to be an exciting showdown between two competitive squads. Fans and players alike are eager to see how these matchups unfold as the season progresses.
