Hilton Head Island Businesses Struggle During Widespread Internet Outage

Hilton Head Island Faces Major Internet Outage Affecting Local Businesses

The warm breeze and sunny skies of Hilton Head Island were not enough to brighten the day for many business owners on Monday, as a significant internet outage caused by fiber damage impacted thousands of residents and businesses across Beaufort County and beyond. The troubles began at around 10:30 a.m. when local business owner Chuck Lobaugh, was on the phone and suddenly found himself cut off from the conversation.

A Disruptive Start to the Week

By 3 p.m., four hours later, the internet service was still down, leaving many like Lobaugh bewildered by the extent of the disruption. As the owner of Curry Printing HHI, Inc. and FASTSIGNS of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, he expressed his concerns, stating, “You certainly don’t expect when there’s an outage for it to be a long extended period.” In today’s digital-first world, where business transactions often depend on stable internet connections, the impact can be profound.

Lobaugh voiced the frustrations of many, noting that “losing the internet is akin to losing power.” With no internet, businesses can face real challenges, particularly with operations that rely on credit card processing and phone systems. The potential for significant business loss becomes very real when connectivity problems arise.

Apologies and Explanations

Sparklight, the internet service provider formerly known as Hargray, quickly took to social media to apologize for the inconvenience. They confirmed that damage caused by a third-party contractor led to the widespread issues, but didn’t provide specifics about the damage location or restoration timeline. The outage affected not only Hilton Head but also nearby areas like Bluffton, Beaufort, and even cities as far away as Savannah and Hinesville.

Impact on Local Businesses

The ripple effects of the outage were felt across various sectors. Lee Lucier, COO of the Richardson Group, estimated that around 20 to 30 of their represented businesses were grappling with the same connectivity problems. Notably, local establishments such as Local Pie and Fish Casual Coastal Seafood in Coligny were thrown into chaos without their internet connections. Meanwhile, other restaurants, including those from the Coastal Restaurant and Bars (CRAB) group, managed to remain operational, which was a small relief amidst the turmoil.

A Surprising Weakness

One of the more intriguing aspects of the outage, according to Lobaugh, was how a single line cut could produce such severe consequences, not only crippling business processes but also impairing the internal communications of Sparklight itself. Before 3:30 p.m., customers found it difficult to reach the provider for assistance, as the officials had previously been overloaded. However, the internet provider later reported that they were finally able to receive inbound calls again, although support chat queues were still overwhelming.

Preparation for Future Outages

Amid all this chaos, Lobaugh considered himself somewhat lucky. He had taken precautions and set up an alternative internet service with Spectrum to avoid being completely offline. While this backup didn’t provide the same level of performance, he could at least manage to send emails and accomplish essential tasks. However, for restaurants and other businesses solely reliant on credit card transactions, the situation was far less tenable.

What’s Next?

As of late Monday afternoon, the extent of the damage and the timeline for complete recovery remained uncertain. With many local businesses heavily impacted, the loss of internet service was undoubtedly a wake-up call. As residents and business owners alike hope for a swift resolution, it is clear that reliable internet connectivity is not just a luxury; it has become a vital lifeline in today’s economy. If you’re a business owner in Hilton Head, Bluffton, Port Royal, or Beaufort, you are encouraged to share how this outage has affected you. After all, these stories matter as the community rallies together during this challenging time.
